What exactly is Niki's ability/power?

So far her alter ego seems capable of taking on 3 men at once, easily taking out the thug in the elevator, throwing D.L. into a wall (at least that's what it looks like to me in the previews), and killing D.L's old gang members who I assume were no push overs.
So what do you think let's her do this? Just a personality shift? Speculate and discuss.

Hence why we speculate. It's fun. Here's an interesting idea. What if a multiple personality disorder was linked to her abilities. Now here is the kicker. She actually has more than one other alter ego. The one we have seen so far is the aggresive one and could possible be a personality that wants to take over and dominate the primary personality as well as the other personalities.
With each personality comes different abilities and different skill sets. The one we've seen so far has extra strength and speed and is highly aggresive. The fighter of the personalities. Another personality could have an ability like Forge and create different things and be intelectual. The next personality could be very perceptive and have heightened senses.
Imagine all the different possibilities... I doubt the writers would want to go that indepth with her but it would definitely be something new and interesting.

From what we've seen so far, Nikki's ability reminds me a lot of the Vodun tradition of possession. In this religion, there is the belief of the Loa, the gods/goddesses of Vodun who take control of a person so the Loa have a gateway into the physical realm and can then help or protect the village, tribe, family, etc.
The Vodun tradition refers to it as "being ridden" (like a horse) and the possessed person is traditionally a willing participant . In Nikki's case she doesn't seem to be unwilling, but is confused, scared and unable to control when the possession takes place. Right now, it seems to occur mainly when she or her son is threatened.
Which is not to say there isn't training she could do. The ancient sage, Cheun Tuan, a Taoist Immortal in the ChiGung tradition, developed a series of dream methods of training that allowed one to enter a daydream-like state at will for the purpose of opening the mind to greater states of consciousness.
These are methods Nikki-A could use to work with her other self, Nikki-B. While she may not have any control when she's possessed by Nikki-B, she would be able to enter the state where she invites NIkki-B in when needed. This would allow her to be less fearful of her other self.
Following the imagery of the horse being ridden, the other training Nikki-A could do is transform herself into a Thoroughbred, a true champion. We don't know for sure that Nikki-B brings enhanced strength to her body, but regardless, if Nikki-A trained herself to be a superb fighter, it would allow Nikki-B to utilize her even more effectively. Nikki-B would then begin to fit into Nikki-A like a glove.
We've seen indications that Nikki-B is a savage, almost feral, fighter, so Nikki-A would benefit from learning Martial Arts that support this fighting style.
Since Nikki-B seems to be strongly feminine, as shown in the way she seduced Nathan in the hotel room, the internal Martial Arts would be a good choice as they utilize tremendous power through the internal generation of Chi. Also, they are exotic fighting styles that would be unknown by most of the fighters/enemies she would be likely to enounter giving her a distinct advantage.
Martial Arts like Chen-Style Tai Chi Tuan, Muslim-style XingYi, or the ancient style of LiuHe BaFa also known as WaterBoxing are incredibly powerful would be devastating in the hands of Nikki-B.
We've been discussing various ways the Heroes can really train their abilities over in Real SuperHero Training

I like Hiro-Worship's suggestion that situation-dependent multiple personality disorder might be her power; normal-Niki comes out as the default persona while aggressive-Niki comes out when physically threatened. It might be interesting to see what happens when she encounters other crises' like emotional or intellectual.
I'm tempted to e-mail that idea to the writers. I just think it would really make the character shine. It might not be super-human strength that throws D.L. into the wall but I'd definitely think that it's possibly peak human as you suggest. Plus supposedly one of the guys she killed was "torn in half" if I recall correctly. Martial Arts can explain a little of the throw but I've been taking martial arts for 10 years and I know I can't throw a guy like that and I'm a pretty big guy myself

Of course, the big question after five episodes is whether her (and DL's) power is genetic or not; did they get passed on to Micah?

That's not so much his powers, as part of his personality. Wolverine spent much time amnesiac, and being raised/reraised by wolves and such, so he became pretty much an animal, and retains much of that wild sense about him.

In my opinion it's more like the Hulk. If memory serves me right, Jekyll and Hyde had to take a potion to initiate the transformation, however the Hulk's powers activated in times of stress much like Niki. Like Niki, Jekyll also often saw Hyde in the mirror, however Jekyll has memory of Hydes activities. Bruce (Banner) however, at the begining at least does not recall what happens when he becomes the Hulk.
I don't know. It's wierd. She does seem to have heighten agility and strength.
