The dimensions and file size limits given should be more than adequate for most members, and has been put in place so that members who still rely on a dial-up connection are not forced to turn off some or all images in order to read and/or participate in the 9th Wonders community.
There will be a grace period, until February 24 2007,
before moderators will start enforcing this new policy.
Signature Guidelines and Signature GraphicsA signature is a
short, personalized message that automatically displays at the bottom of your posts. You can set this up in your control panel (
Edit Signature). It can contain both text and graphics (using [img] tags). The following rules must be followed for signature graphics:
- Total Maximum file size: 75K
- Maximum dimensions (in pixels): 520 x 150 (width x height)
- Maximum signature area (in pixels): 525 x 175 (the remaining 25 pixel height is for TEXT ONLY)
NOTE: Signatures images which do not adhere to these guidelines may be edited by a moderator. 75K applies to the total file size of
all images used in a signature.
AvatarsYou are allowed to upload a custom avatar graphic and can set this up in your control panel (
Edit Avatar Settings). The following rules must be followed for your avatar:
- Maximum file size: 35K
- Maximum dimensions (in pixels): 90 x 90
- Allowable graphic formats: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG
Personal PhotoYou are allowed to upload a
personal photo which will be displayed in your User Profile. The following rules must be followed for your personal photo:
- Maximum file size: 40K
- Maximum dimensions (in pixels): 150 x 150
- Allowable graphic formats: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG
Post GraphicsYou can also place images in your posts. This is accomplished in the post dialog box (when clicking on Reply in a forum thread). You can insert images using two different methods:
URL Link
At the top of the dialog box is a menu bar with an “Insert Image” icon (roll over icon to see description). Clicking on this icon enables you to enter an HTTP link to a URL containing the graphic). The following rules must be followed for URL linked graphics:- Maximum file size: 100K
- Maximum dimensions (in pixels): width less than 520 pixels
NOTE: Images which do not adhere to these guidelines may be edited by a moderator from [img] tags to [url] tags.
Upload Image
Toward the middle of the dialog box is an Attachments area. Clicking on the Browse button allows you to upload a graphic to display in your reply post. The following rules must be followed for uploaded graphics:- Maximum file size: 50K
- Allowable graphic formats: GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG
Ensuring appropriate Graphic file size and dimensionsYou are responsible to figure out if your graphics are the proper size.
You need to determine that both of these (file size and dimensions) follow the graphic rules for the kind of image you are using (avatar, signature, or post).
To do this, you need to open your graphic in a graphics editing application such as Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks. If you don’t have these applications, there are many other applications, even free ones that come loaded on your computer. After opening the graphic editor application, you will need to find the menu function that tells you the attributes of the graphic file. For example, in MS Paint, you go to Image | Attributes to get this info. These programs will let you edit the dimensions (width by height) of an image, which will affect the file size. Work with it until it meets the graphic rules.
