Can someone summarize what we know about the train derailment?
I could hardly understand what they said on the news (KFVD is fictional, right?). Couldn't read anything on the newspaper.

I'm just wondering how it happened and if someone with powers perhaps caused it, intentional or not?
Of course, this could be just an accident to demonstrate Claire's ability, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to it than that, really.

I should say, please no spoilers if this turns out to be true and you know it. Then I prefer not knowing. wink.gif

It does seem like there is a bit more to a lot of the events in the show than meets the eye at first.

But it does strike me that this derailment was just an event to demonstrate Claire's ability. And further show us how much of an idiot her friend Jackie is. rolleyes.gif

I hadn't thought of the train derailment as possibly being staged, that would be almost a direct lift from Unbreakable, right? Wasn't the train accident in Bruce Willis's character's backstory supposedly staged by Mr. Glass (Sam Jackson)... or did I make that up.

Off-topic: honestly I didn't really like that movie. I know I was supposed to given it's superhero theme and everything, but I don't know, I just thought it sorta sucked. Like to me it never got off the ground. The whole movie felt like a lot of buildup and then the last third was like "Oh, guess we better wrap this up", but then I felt like it didn't end quickly enough either. I don't know... all in all, I just wasn't feeling Unbreakable.

Still, the train derailment as a test of Claire's powers would be interesting, but would the testers know for certain she was going to walk past that place? Also, how could they know that she would feel compelled to rush in there? It wasn't like she went in there with heroic intentions, at first she just wanted to see what would happen.

The derailment being a test for Claire for real, as in, part of the show...I didn't want to go there. My comment was about it being a demonstration from the writer's side. That seems most obvious.

But I went further to say that the derailment was not an accident. Perhaps someone else tested his/her superpowers and caused the train to derail in the process. Either intentional or not.

Still trying to find a transcript to find out what has been said in the news and what was - perhaps - decipherable from the newspaper. No luck, yet. Maybe I'll listen to those parts again with headphones. biggrin.gif

You know that you are addicted to Heroes if...

Oh boy.

Ethan: Haven't seen Unbreakable. Heard good and bad things about it, but never got around to it. Sounds like Claire could be inspired by some of that, though.

I think that the train derailment was for (at least... as many of the items in the series have shown so far...) two reasons. The first reason was not to show how invulerable the girl was as she rescued the man, it was to obtain the nuclear materials to make the bomb that will be set off in NY on the 8th if the heros cannot stop it.
I wondered about why a train wreck, until I heard that it was a nuclear train...
Chimera258
Really? A nuclear train?

Hm..this observation escaped me too.

I really should take up the rewatching a bunch of times thing again. smile.gif
Abraxas
Yes, the train was registered to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. I only got that on repeated re-watching.

I think TheEvan is right. 24 with superheroes? biggrin.gif

At one point, an actual employee of the NRC posted here to state that the NRC actually does not commission any trains. Thought that was humorous...
