If they don't mean "save the cheerleader" in sort of mushy moral sense, but in the very physical staying alive sense, there must be a way she could die. Brain removal, anyone?
I think that was the whole point of her "death" in the series. Part of the mythos of this series is that people get "abilities" but they make it sound as if it's the next evolutionary step.
Thus, Claire's powers seem to stem from a certain part of her brain (that was impaled by the stick). So, if this part of the brain were irrevocably damaged (which would be hard considering that once the stick was removed, she was able to start healing again), then Claire could indeed die.
If every "hero" had their "abilities" located in the same part of the brain, it could explain Sylar's fascination with them.
