Okay, from the promos for the new episode on monday, we see a short clip of Niki talking with her alter-ego. Now many people think that Niki is just psycho crazy, but here's my theory.
Niki's evil side (Alter-ego) lives in a parallel universe, where she can only see what Niki is doing, and has to follow her everywhere in mirrors because she is forced to. The alter-ego seems to want to control Niki and also help her, but can only do it for a short time (Ex: showing the real Niki where to burry the mobsters that she killed). My theory is that whenever the real Niki sees a mirror, or any type of screen, the alter-Niki can take over. In the next episode, the real Niki seems to be able to finally contact her alter-ego through mirrors now.
Now that's my theory on how Niki's powers work, have at it.
P.S. My first thread, Yay!

Wow, good theory. Think she'll be able to bring out alternate-universe versions of other heroes?

I think her alter ego is there inside her, the only reason why she pops up in mirrors is because that's where she can see herself. She is the other person. Kind of hard to explain, I guess we're gonna have to see how it all unfolds aint we?

It seems like there's a pretty apparent psychology analogy to be drawn here. I took one psych class in high school a long time ago so I don't really know much about this, but could there be like an id/ego dynamic here, or something along those lines?
There must be some former psych major here somewhere.
I also remember reading an article one time about something called the Mirror Phase, I think it was written by Jacques Lacan, although I could be getting a few different classes mixed up, it's been awhile.

I'm pretty sure its not psychology coming into play with Niki. Remember in the first episode when Niki was searching for Micah, how the real Niki left the room, and we saw Niki's reflection (Alter ego) still there on the mirror. Freaky I know! I can't wait for the next episode, D.L and Niki fighting will be cool.

My only problem with that is that we already have a hero, namely Hiro, who's powers involve manipulation of space-time, which would include stuff like alternate realities, alternate dimensions, alternate timelines and everything else that comes with them. If "Jessica" was from an alternate dimension that would mean she has the ability to travel through space-time in a similar way. I have no idea how they're going to explain the whole Nikki/Jessica thing, but I just don't think this is likely to be it.

Whatever theory you subscribe to make sure you account for the tattoo being on Jessica/NikkiB's back but not on Nikki's.

I realize that many of us are or were comic book fanatics. Alternate universes or parallel universes are commonly found in comics. I, for one, hope that the writers don't bring the concept of alternate realities into the show. This show is supposed to be "realistic", as close to our real world as possible. Tossing alternate realities while also focusing on genetic mutation seems a bit too much.

Good theory. I think that niki (or niki's alter-ego) has the power of super strength.

I think this is overanalysing. I think Nikki has classic multiple personality disorder. One is good, the other is a badass looking after the weaker one. I'll use the green goblin as an example. Aside from pumpkin bombs and the glider, Norman Osborne had multiple personality disorder. He was the weak one where he was dominated by the green goblin.
Many of spiderman's enemies, with powers aside were good old fashioned sociopaths. No reason why we can't have a hero with this condition. I think it's cool they do.

ooooh.
There was a book I read about 3-4 years ago where their magic system was based off mirrors. the magicans in this world used mirrors to scry through space/time/dimensions and transport things through it.
the only issue was that any reflect surface could cause this mirror magic to happen, and merely looking at yourself in the reflection can be dangerous, causing insanity.
anyways back to topic,
maybe Niki can just ... er... channel her mirror persona? ala medium style?

I'll use my Green Goblin example again. Remember Willian Defoe in the movie talked to the Green Goblin in the mirror?
The mirror is just a method the show is using to show the 2 personalities talking to eachother..
Another example could be Gollum/Smiegel.. Remember he was talking to his other personality in the water before Sam the fat hobbit pounded him?

If Niki was just a case of multiple personalities, then she wouldn't fit the hero profile that the show has established. That isn't evolution creating a super person. There has to be something more to it than a mental disorder.

MPD doesn't account for the tattoo appearing and disappearing.
psychosomatic scars can be formed, but not tattoo ink. At minimum they must account for this. So she has to either have two bodies or a method of forming a tattoo.

Well, everything seems logical except the tatto. Unless the tattoo forms their everytime Niki is controled.
