Anyone else notice there were too many sentimental scenes in this week's episode? To wit:
Claire: "AND THEN THEY'LL WISH THEY'D NEVER ADOPTED ME!" *stunned silence* "I'm sorry, Claire!"
Nathan's Wife: "I need hope, Nathan. Tell me what I want to hear. I need hope."
Ted: "Everything I said."
D.L.: "Things can't go back to the way they were. I'm sorry."
Micah: *Looks confused*
Simone: "My dad died."
Anyone else notice this?

Ha ha! I did.
Don't forget Matt... "Listen honey, we need to talk, I wanted to tell you I love you, didn't want it to go unsaid. blah blah blah."
Peter is sentimental every freakin week.

It did seem like quite a bit of emo scenes, but most of them don't bother me.
Peter just is annoying, I don't know why.

I HEAR YA MAN!
He sounds like he's a cross between Stephen Baldwin and Keanu Reeves, a la Bill & Ted. Every time he breaks into a dialog I expect him to say "Duude" at least once.

Haha, that's probably why they cast him as Rocky Balboa's son in the next Rocky movie.

For me, the overused tool was "coincidence".
The painting was sold to...Linderman!
1,000's of miles of highway around LA/LV, and DL runs into...Hiro!
For me, it appears like huge leaps of coincidence are being used in place of actual story work. Some of them work well enough, but others are just too much to accept.
For example, why would a NY Congressman look for organized crime money in LV when Atlantic City is closer? Why would an LV crime boss buy a 2 bit painting from a 2nd rate painter that Simone herself said she could not sell?
It's just a bit much.

Well, that's the entire series. I'm talking about this week in particular, it seemed like every character with the exception of Hiro had a scene that was designed to make you cry.

Simone said she couldn't sell the paintings he that he did when he was sober. Not ALL of his paintings. How do you think he gets is drugs?
Also, Linderman is helping Nathan out for his own personal gain. Nathan did not go to him, but rather, Linderman went towards Nathan. That's how Nathan got that extra bit of millions for his campaign.
I don't think this episode had too many sentimental scenes. It shows their lives and who they are aside from the powers. I wouldn't complain about it. Without, people would end up complaining about the lack of character build up anyways. I guess you can satisfy one person, but not everyone at the same time!

Well i disagree, Hiros hasnt ahd ANY sentimental moments yet and he is by far my facorate character, he has alot of build in his character already and he doesnt even get alot of time to build it each episode. Personally i dont give a damn about most of the drama in the last episode because its just not relevant. I love the show but I hated the last episode (a) because it was too cheesy (my friend described it as x men meets days of our lives) (

I HATE THAT KID (but thats a WHOLE different conversation)
i think if theyre gonna call it heroes they need to make them heroes not a bunch of whiny a** emo characters. Imagine if they are this emo when they fight sylar, theyll definantly loose except Hiro, because theyre too weak willed.
I got a group of people together to watch the episode and i was very excited, after the ep i was disappoineted and dont forget embarassed. Plus the friends that hadnt seen the show before said they dont plan on watching it again.
dont get me wrong some drama in certain key moments is needed but they need to cut the uneeded drama fast or I think alot of people will loose interest. I already feel like they are starting to loose direction.
sorry for the novel..poke holes at will

What about when Hiro thought he wasn't a hero anymore? That was pretty sentimental... besides, Hiro's everyones favorite character. Everybody loves Hiro! Also, Hiro's character was built up alot more than everyone elses in the past episodes, where as of Nathan, we didn't know he had a wife until a couple episodes ago, and that she was disabled.
If people lose interest in a show because of a little drama, then you can't really call yourself a fan of it. It's like eating your favorite cereal for years, then one day finding out that they changed the mascot from a cool cat to a sappy squirrel for a week. Still the same cereal in the box, just with a different character. Would you stop eating the same cereal?
I think this episode was basically for character build which we haven't seen. It shows how they react to certain situations (Nathan showing his political side by lying to his wife) and how close they are to their family.

there was more than a little drama in the last ep, and no im not a true fan yet because im still making up my mind if i want to like the show. They have my attention but im not devout. I do like the show overall and every show has its ups and downs according to peoples personal preferences. Its true they are developing the characters which is fine but they crammed alot of drama into one episode which made me pretty turned off to it. I did, however like certain things about this ep. And I do still like the show overall i see alot ofpotential , but i hope it doesnt disappoint. Im still giving it time though.

It's a drama, apart from the SciFi elements. We need to care for these characters. And if anyone has been following what's happening in comic books/manga, they're much more dramatic that the shoot-em-ups of the early days.
This show is very much a comic strip, with unreal coincidences, fantastic sequences, and a lot of human struggle. So I think the show is right on the mark.
Plus, it's a little realistic. Persons discovering nowadays that they have special powers would probably go through a lot of questioning: why me? Am I part of an experiment? Did someone do this to me? What am I supposed to use this for? What is so different about me, did I get this from my parents? I don't think many of us would be like, "Cool," and just start flying around to the astonishment of others or walking down the middle of highschool sticking pencils in our eyes saying, "Ha ha! I can heal myself!"
There's going to be a little struggle coming to grips with what's happening. So I like that the characters have pathos.

The most overused tools of the series thus far are Peter's annoyingly long bangs and the constant blubbering that all of the women on the show do in every episode. The actor who plays Peter has even expressed that the bangs got to go and I hope they do soon. Bangs make sense on women but on men they just look really out of place. Then we get to the blubbering women on the show Niki, Simone and Claire. Every scene they are in is practically a "boo hoo" *sob* *sob* *sob* fest over some obscure reason. Matt's wife is guilty of it too but at least she hasn't done it all the time like the other gals.

Well, yes, Peter is a huge, overused tool. I agree with Gunzlingr on that one...
Meanwhile back in the topic, I shall now clear something up. Sentimental scenes are fine. They add to the show. They add to the characters. It gets the show nominated for Emmys. But if everyone has one every week, the show becomes a MELOdrama. And those suck.
They do!
