Full Version: Can you pick out the Haitian?

Honestly, short of Matt having read the script why would he say the mind wiping guy was a Haitian? Can you tell nationality of somebody just by looking at them (I mean besides if they are Japanese or Chinese or something like that).

To me that guy just looked like a bald black guy who could just as easily been American. Matt never heard him speak or had any other reason to think the guy was a Haitian. He wasn't wearing a "Kiss Me, I'm a Haitian Telepath" button was he?

It was Ted who said he was a Haitian, not Matt. Maybe Matt only picks up on this after Ted says it. Ted also said that the Haitian was a student, right? Did he actually talk to him?

Oh, I must have missed that. The Haitian was a student where Ted went to school?

Ted said there was a Haitian student at the bar he was in after making a big sale. Matt puts it together that the Haitian might be the guy he saw in the bar, so he asks Ted to describe him. Matt finishes the description for him.

It was a bit of a stretch for him to put two and two together like that, but he's a good cop who might just as easily have found out it was a goose chase.

He actually looks Haitian or African. He has very distinct features that are more common amongst Blacks of Carribean and African origin. Anyone whose spent time around people of various ethnic backgrounds ( be they African Americans vs. Blacks of African or Carribean origin, or Hispanic/Latino people from Mexico or South America vs. those from places like Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Repiblic ) will be able to discern the subtle differences. A cop like Matt could be expected to have more of an eye for identifying different ethnic features due to his law enforement background. Furthermore, if "The Haitian" ever spoke we would likely have a disitinctly French accent which would be a give-away as to his origins. And if "The Haitian's" powers are like Matt's ( who hears people's thoughts in their own voices ) and his mental projections involve projecting his actual voice they would both know what he sounds like.

What baffles me is that not only did Ted know that he was a Haitian student (indicating he spoke, or SOMEONE spoke to him) but that he said he woke up with cuts and bruises?

Interestingly, the actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis, actually is Haitian.

(Although most people would not be able to be that specific on his origin.)

If Ted knew that there were a couple from Wyoming, and some Professors, then that implies that he talked with the people in the bar - including the Haitian student. Unless, of course, people from Wyoming have very distinctive features smile.gif

The first post made me laugh and inspired this:

Maybe because it sounds better for Ted to say, "Stop the Haitian!" than "Stop the black guy!"

sure I saw that button somewhere laugh.gif

I knew first time I saw him that he was haitian to be honest. But that's probably for 2 reasons:

1. I'm Haitian
2. I'm extremely good at judging most minority national origin.

But back to the original question, ted did indicate that there was a student from Haiti.

OK I just re-watched that scene again and there is a weird noise that you hear when he is recounting the story, going into the bit where he is blacked out for 2 days.

Is it a possibility that Matt heard / sensed / felt the edit job on Ted memory?

And Matt did pump him for more info before jumping to any conclutions: " Was he big, bald?"

The Haitian has control over his mind to put up a block...

Not like it actually takes that much to put up a block, but he projects NO thoughts whatsoever.

Remember Matt in the bar before he blacks out? He scans everyone, then when he gets to The Haitian, he hears nothing.

hahahahaha...I was wondering if anyone would pick up on this simple logic.

the same thing ran through my mind, I'm loving the "kiss me, I'm a haitian telepath," I think someone made a picture for that in the comedy art section, was that you?
