Be aware that spoilers and upcoming episode information might be discussed here.

Today, I received what might have been the most exciting news yet to come, albeit in rumor form - that one-time BBC Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston might soon be joining Heroes. For one episode or multiple episodes, who knows. Is he playing Sylar? Or someone else? Again, who knows.

I first saw and majorly noticed Eccleston's work when he first appeared as the ninth incarnation of The Doctor in the revived British Doctor Who series. Eccleston was different from any actor who had played him before. He gave it an emotional performance, where you could tell a lot was going on inside for The Doctor despite his happy-go-lucky exterior. (And if you haven't seen Doctor Who yet, check out the SciFi Channel repeats or order the DVD!) Eccleston was great; but, sadly for fans the BBC only signed this wonderful new Doctor for only one year, so he was gone after only three months of 13 extremely good episodes. (Fans were happy, though, to see that David Tennant ably filled Eccleston's shoes with a performance of his own as The Doctor)

If this rumor is true - and signs are pointing to it being true - Heroes fans are in for a treat. I always thought it was so cool that some actors whose work I've loved for years, like Adrian Pasdar or Greg Grunberg, were involved with this show. Never in a million years, though, did I expect to see Eccleston on an American television program. (Though I once joked about it on a KryptonSite April Fool's feature).

Readers of 9thWonders and anyone who knows me know I'm a HUGE fan of Doctor Who, even so far as sprinking Who references in here and there if you look at some past Soapboxes. The cheesy fan in me almost hopes for a scene between Eccleston and Hiro so he can scoff at the idea of a man who travels through time and space. After all, The Doctor is the quintessential traveler through time and space.

This is a major casting coup, and the latest good news for the show. Even if we don't see Eccleston's stuff until the show returns from a streak of winter repeats, it'll be well worth it. Or, to coin a phrase from the Doctor... it will be Fantastic!

I'm following you around today Craig. Pardon the cross posting here but since we can't get all those earlier threads merged, I suspect your soapbox thread will last a lot longer!

I'm with you on Doctor Who and Chris was fantastic as the Ninth. Wasn't quite sure what his real reasons were for leaving the show (typecasting, pace of filming or just not the "right" role/show for him?) If AA's scoop is true, I suspect Heroes has stronger appeal b/c of the real life drama aspect with complex characters like Mr HRG (let's face it, we love Doctor Who because it IS campy and a little crack at times).

My totally random theory is that he'll be playing Mira's boss. It makes some sense and fits Ausiello's fill in the * blanks, after all!

I think Eccleston and Russell T. Davies might not have had the same impressions of what Doctor Who would have become. Davies wanted something more all-ages, whereas Eccleston wanted to do something adult and serious with The Doctor.

That's my impression, at least.

It's also been said that Eccleston never planned or promised to do more than one season... so, that's really just the BBC's fault for not keeping him around more.

Well, Eccleston can always do those radio plays and take us to the gap of time that exists after the Eighth Doctor and when the Ninth Doctor met Rose. This would explain how the Eighth Doctor died and regenerated into the Ninth Doctor. Personally, I think it was directly caused by injures the Eighth Doctor sustained after he set up the events to destroy the Daleks in the Time War.
CraigB
The naive fan in me would like to believe that the Ninth Doctor had just regenerated right before "Rose." Which is why he did the look-in-the-mirror thing.

As a fellow Brit of Ecclestone's, he's done much better work than Doctor Who such as classic British TV like "Our Friends In The North" and the part where he really came to the public eye, the regular cast member senior policeman who died at the hands of Robert Carlyle in "Cracker".

I think he'd be great in Heroes but the only problem Ecclestone has is that he hates being typecast. I think Cracker, at two years, was the longest he's ever been in a role. And if you ever see "The Making Of Cracker", he was looking to leave long before then.

brilliant news if true, but PLEASE, no Eccleston/Hiro convo regarding space/time travel... this kind of breaking down the walls is just wrong... specifically I'm thinking of a 'pea soup' refrence in a Linda Blair guest starring episode of Supernatural, and how it totally killed an otherwise fine episode..

***POSSIBLE SPOILER***

Eccleston Lands Role in 'Heroes'

Christopher Eccleston is to star in US TV series Heroes after wowing US audiences with his portrayal of the Time Lord in cult British TV show Doctor Who. The 42-year-old actor is to appear in the US sci-fi drama, which sees a group of people unite to stop a nuclear explosion after realizing they have superpowers, but bosses won't reveal which part he's signed on to play. However, there are rumors the Gone In Sixty Seconds star could take the role of mystery serial killer Sylar. A show insider told British newspaper Daily Star, "Chris is a fantastic actor and we're delighted to have him on board. No one has seen Sylar and Christopher could be perfect as the bad guy."

In the new TV Guide this week, an article in what they're calling their "Sci Fi Preview" issue says that Eccleston's role will be an Invisible man who's had his powers for a long time, years I think it said.

I don't think I'll ever warm up to the new Dr. Who. But it doesn't matter if we get to see Christopher Eccleston on Heroes. I can settle.

I think Tom Baker was just as emotional as Eccleston, however, in a different way. What Eccleston brought to the show was a deep rooted trauma, saddness, remorse, and maybe even guilt for the destruction of his race (which influenced much of his performance). All previous doctors' were either terribly serious or in the case of Baker and maybe to a lesser degree, Peter Davison, they were just happy-go-lucky.

That would be awesome. I'm also a huge Who fan. I have fond memories of walking home from the bus stop after school, sitting down in front of the TV, watching the last few minutes of Scooby... and then Dr. Who on PBS with Tom Baker. Those were the days. rolleyes.gif
