Full Version: Why did Sylar need to use his hands to kill?

Rocky Dragon
If Sylar has the ability to cut thru bone with his mind why did he have to hold Jackie by the throat with his hand?

Couldn't he have just levitated her there with his mind?

Also, when he killed Chandra in the cab he was smashing Suresh into the window with his hands like a big ape. He didn't seem to have any telekinetic powers at all then or at least wasn't using them.

Did he run into Hank McCoy somewhere and slice his brain open and suck out his Beast-ly powers?

Naw, I guess not. He'd be all blue and furry in that case.

I Some things he can't do. Like holding Jackie up in the air with TK. Why can't he do that? Because George Lucas and Lucasfilm LTD. would be on NBC's butt for Plagerism. (Sylar choking someone with TK = Darth Vader)

As for the killing Chandra with his bare hands; someone here said that it was probably because he hated him so much that he wanted the attack to be more personal.

I wonder why Sylar would be in the back seat since they were good friends right? Wouldn't he have hopped in with Chandra in the front? Was Chandra going to charge his friend like any common passenger?

Or maybe when he is in his evil persona he looks different and Chandra didn't know it was Sylar? Like Dr. Jekyl and mr. Hyde?
jediman500
Actually, I think it's probably just that at that time of night, Chandra probably didn't see his face. Or Sylar just hopped in without warning and then proceded to bash Chandra's head in.

Sometimes its a nice feeling to get your hands dirty, enjoy your work. If I'm to believe anything I've learned about mass murderers from tv, its that killing a person is a rush in itself.
addictedtoheroes
he probably cannot use his powers too often

The way I rationalized it is:

1) Sylar doesn't want to draw anymore attention to himself if he can help it. If he bashed Chandra's head in from the back seat it looks like Chandra picked up an insane, random passenger in New York. It was a fare gone bad. There isn't as much suspicion that Chandra was the target, just some generic cabby who got unlucky.

2) Sylar has no interest in Chandra's brain. He saves the skull-cutting for Heroes.

3) It was a dramatic way to show Sylar's watch and wrath.

i hate to be a wet blanket, but the reason Sylar was holding Jackie with his hand is the same reason he took so long to kill her, when we saw Charlie die in a matter of seconds

dramatic license

the main thing i was thinking when he grabbed Jackie was "so much for Audrey's 'crime scenes without fingerprints'..."

(unless he was telekinetically obscuring his fingerprints, of course)
steve2112
Yes I agree it's just for drama..

Like when he used his finger to make the cut.. It looks cool.

But maybe using his hands helps him to focus his power in some way. But they'll never get that detailed into an explanation.
amolion
he was lifting jackie, fighting claire and trying to lop her head off... i think that that would have taken far too much concentration.

Well he could have known that the cheerleaders power was regeneration. maybe he thought that her power was limited to physical wounds and if she was unconsious her brain wouldn't be able to send the message across her body to rebuild body parts...i dunno

At that point they weren't friends. In the first episode Mohinder finds an answering machine message recorded between Sylar and Chandra. Chandra didnt want any more to do with Sylar.

This may seem like a stupid question, and I feel like an idiot for not knowing this off the top of my head... but can you even leave fingerprints on someone elses skin?

I'm thinking no. Unless you have some substance on your hand which would leave a visible print. But I think the skin oils would counter-act eachother otherwise and make leaving a print on someone's skin difficult, if not impossible.

I dunno though.

Either way I don't remember seeing him touch anything other than Jackie's skin, so... no fingerprints?

**EDIT**

I just did a little research and new techniques can turn up latent prints on human skin. But only under certain circumstances and only within a very limited ( about 1hr ) period of time. So catching a print that way is not always easy, much less possible in every case.

The way I saw it I thought he knew that she had the power of regeneration. If he is using telekenisis to split open the heads he probably thought he had focus his power into keeping the parts separate so she couldn't regenerate. He could always just be getting sloppy.

Sylar is obviously mentally disturbed. He's been shown that's he's sadistic killer. He enjoys causing pain.

Chandra ended the relationship for some reason. Probably because Sylar was showing signs of his sadistic behavior. So Sylar killed Chandra that way as revenge.

When it comes to using his finger as a knife, no he probably doesn't need to. I doubt he stood behind Charlie with his finger pointed at her head. In Jackie's case however, Jackie was staring right at him. He probably pointed at her skull for the psychological effects as well as the physical.

Maybe he's just indecisive. "hmm, how shall I kill this person today..." lol

Um, George Lucas did not invent the concept of telekinesis. As long as Sylar doesn't put on a black mask and helmet and start talking like a wheezy asthmatic, I doubt NBC has to worry about copyright infringement lawsuits.

but they have to worry about lawsuits dealing with food disposals! remember in the first show when Claire put her hand down the sink to grab her ring and the food disposer ate her hand? Well the maker of that device has a law suit against NBC and Heroes trying to stop them from airing that episode again!

but I don't think Lucas is that pitty thou!

Being a StarWars fan since 1977 (saw it in the theaters about 6 times. yes, i'm that old), when Sylar suspended Jackie in the air choking her IS very Darth Vader-like. Remember in Episode IV, A New Hope, Darth Vader "questions" one Captain Antilles aboard the Tantive IV as to the whereabouts of certain stolen battlestation plans and an ambassador with an odd hair style smile.gif

Sylar could have levitated Jackie, but I imagine that takes concentration, and he would have had to divide that between the brute force used to hold her up and the precision needed to cleave her skull.

I believe the name of the food disposal unit manufacturer was visible in that particular scene. The company felt people would have negative opinions of their company based on that scene. All NBC has to do is airbrush that manufacturer's name out of future broadcasts.
