9th Wonders Boards > Episode Discussions > Season One > #1: "Genesis"

Hello all, this is my 1st post here at the 9th wonder, and i gotta say, heroes is easily my new favorite show! that being said, i'd like to let you all know that about 2 months ago, i got hold a copy of the piolet ep. that was WWWAAAYYY diffrent than the one they aired last night. thought i'd share

1. the original version was about 75 minutes long. (thought then that the 1st ep. would be an hour and a half.)

2. the songs they changed. i know they removed 2 from the batman beyond soundtrack, but... the song that's playing (open your eyes) before Niki get's jacked is diffrent. (the original version was MUCH creeper, with loud yelling singing when she looks at the eclipse.) Also, the backstreet singers were ADDED (they were there, but didng get airtime.), as well as the Puffy Ami Yumi song that playes as Hiro is ejected from the bar.*don't know the name of the song, but i know it's on their greatest hits cd.

3. the opening "HEROES" part was diffrent. it started with Peter on the roof.

4. THE biggest change in the ep. WOW! Issac's first scene where his girlfriend comes in, and he's trashing his paintings, he should have showen her the suscide bombing pic (says "i painted it 3 weeks ago), and then she should have said "you were high, you don't know when you painted it, you could have painted it this morning!" -Issac responds with "NO! I painted THIS this morning" and shows her a painting of a girl standing with one leg proped up on a chair, holding the other painting just like she currently was! she freaks out, and leaves. ISSAC HANDCUFF''S HIMSELF TO A RADIATOR, so not to get high, (we see his drugs are out of reach, but there is a SAW on the floor within reach!) ---when they return, he's hacked off his own hand to get free and high. *i almost want to say there was a hand in the scene, don't remember...*(issac never slumps to the ground, and notices the painting of the fire Claire was in.)

well, enjoy, gotta run, but i'll post more brain fudge later!

Agreed about the intro being different. Also the font of the intro credits was different, I believe. As was the part where the name of the episode was written on the rooftop behind the guy who thinks he can fly. As for the Karaoke singers, they did get some air time, I totally remember them in their basketball jerseys. They were just ending a song or something before, so you didn't hear what song they were singing.

Isaac's painting of the girl wasn't with a leg up on a chair, it was her standing in the doorway with a specific painting that she had just brought in with her. See here: http://www.9thwonders.com/gallery/simone.php

The hand sawing off scene the nurse guy also talks about getting a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. I think they change this scene for two reasons, I always thought it was odd that in the original pilot, the nurse leaves the hand-cut off guy to go look at a painting of himself flying. I mean, he's a nurse! Also, the painting that Isaac paints was in black and white in the original pilot. Here it was presented with bright neon yellows and reds.

I also don't remember the boy reading the 9th wonders comic book in the original pilot. Because it struck both me and my roommate how the stone creature was on Hiro's computer screensaver and then it was on the cover of the boy's comic book. (It's the figure in the banner of this website too by the way). This one though, I may have just forgotten about. *shrug*

Also, a big change that wasn't mentioned yet... when I watched the screener pilot, the flight scene at the end was much different in terms of the effects. In fact it looked downright crappy. I remember thinking how it looked like the brother was swinging on a crane cable. As aired last night, you actually see the brothers twirling around and floating between the two buildings, it looked much better.

that's right! the brother flys up and catches him. when Peter ask's Nathan how he's flying, he just repeats "i don't konw". and DOES NOT DROP HIM! (in fact it looked like they had a happy ending, laugh.gif ) just flew away!

Sounds a little Peter Panish doesn't it?

haha, well the show I saw last night was still good.

Maybe they had to clean it up for the TV audience so the "Crazy Christians" didn't go complaining to the FCC. We all know what they can do to a show.

First off Welcome to 9th Wonders, darkhuman! Secondly, I was a bit disinpointed in the changes myself, but I understaind they had to make those changes to make air time. I did however liked how they changed the ending from Peter not letting go of his brothers arm, to letting go and falling... It made for a better cliffhanger.

I've never seen the original pilot, but I think it's a shame that they didn't allude strongly to the fact that Isaac cut his hand off in last night's pilot. To me, that seems like it must have been important, that he would go to such an extreme; I think it shows his addiction more clearly.

Just a thought.

I agree with you about that.. also, I like the idea that, in addition to not caving to the drug addiction, Isaac also handcuffed himself up so he couldn't paint either. Poor guy.

Ok, I knew I wasn't going crazy when they didn't show the part of Isaac showing what he painted that morning when she went in.

I'm assuming they removed the hand cutting part because of the graphic content, they had enough when they showed Claire's hand get mauled. Also it would be a little difficult as an artist to have one hand, and who knows, it might've been his artistic one.

Where can I get the 75 min pilot? All Ive seen are the trailers shown on Youtube.
HeroesFanatic
Hi guys.. It was a special 75 minute version of the pilot episode that was specially cut and premiered at this years San Diego Comic Con. It was a comic con exclusive and they never intended to air it.

Check out this thread about some pilot differences, too. In it there are screenshots of Uluru as a screensaver, and on the 9thWonders comic book, plus the difference at the end of the premiere.

Just a quick little note... to say the following:

1. Don't bash people, when there's no cause. The "Crazy Christians" comment is completely out of no where... (unless of course, you typed this comment while watching Studio 60, after Heroes... ha ha!)

2. If they cut the hand scene (Oops... no pun intended, seriously) because of worries about complaints of the graphic nature of the show, then it seems they also would have lessened the screentime given to stripping, and Claire mangling herself in various ways.

I highly doubt worries about 'cleaning it up' and "Crazy Christians" were the reason for the change in scene - but it's nice to know you give us that much credit... ha ha!

I have actually heard people also mention the strippng seen was cut down dramatically from Pilot. and the "Crazy Christians" comment I beleive is very fair as they do tend to ruin quite a lot of telivision (the crazy one's that is.

"To all the activists out there, it is non of your business what I do in my bedroom and that includes what is on my telivision. That is the beauty of broadcast there are many channels and most sets have multiple means to change them." - An open mind.
