The way i understand it is how follows. If a child is born with a disease that the mother doesn't have that means the mother has the anti-bodies capable of cureing the disease. IF the mother was to then conceve again the child born would also posses the anti bodies to sure the disease. That situation happened with Mohinders sister and mother. Now do i really beleive that its just that, not really.

The way Mohinder described it to Molly in the first season kind of made it sound like a virus already known and found in the normal human world, not something newly discovered that only affects specials.

Does this mean Mohinder is special, well his blood is the only thing that can fight the virus that seems to only effect/kill people with powers so he is special in that effect. Does this mean its his power per say, well it seems more a side effect of him being created in part to cure his sister. So sister with powers gets sick, they have Mohinder to cure her with the explanation you gave above and because the problem in this case was the virus that kills people with powers he developed antibodies to fight such.
