Full Version: Writer's Strike

I got this email this morning. Just thought I'd pass it on.
If you haven't already been aware of the current Writer's Guild of America protest, well you are in for a big surprise. As of last night, the WGA has officially gone on strike and will not write any more scripts for film (television and the big screen) until they have settled an agreement. This affects all of our favorite shows, including 'Heroes.'

'Heroes' was meant to have 3 different volumes (story arcs) this season, the first one concluding on Episode 11 (December 03). Because of this strike in place, the set of 'Heroes' re-shot Episode 11 as the "season finale" for Season 2 and now because of the strike, we will only go to Episode 11 and no further.

You can go into the topic below to read more about the strike itself and how it affects the writers' and the television networks:

Continue visiting the site for more updates on the show and the strike...Hopefully something is worked out in time to continue the rest of the season.

NOOOOOOOO! Really bad timing. So sad.

-Sigh-

Oh well, they are striking for something good. They get little to no money for works posted online for download and DVDS

so sure, the ability to watch Heroes online is handy, but the writers get no money from it.

And I could be wrong, but last I read they recieved 4 cents for every DVD sold.

Ew. I would strike too.

can we not have two threads about this? Its already depressing as it is T___T
Stoner
Well it's a big story so it's not surprising, I'm surprised there aren't more threads about it.
OlyMendez
Two different threads for two different points. Jason Badower was affected because his job depends on the writers giving him the story.

Thread here because it affects Cast, Crew and Show
Stoner
Actuallly there's three then, one here, one in the GN section and one in Gen Dis so.
OlyMendez
It's going to affect the WHOLE entertainment industry in some way. That's alot of stuff.

Here's another article about the strike http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/stor...&siteid=rss

Both sides are being completely stubborn and childish. No wonder they haven't come to any compromises yet. I think they should have an outside, unbiased, unrelated person do the negotiating since they are bringing personal baggage to the table, and not treating it as a BUSINESS deal.

Since all of our favorite TV shows are going to be out of commission soon, why not a Tag-Team steel cage death match between the AMPTP and the WGA? WINNER TAKES ALL! At least it would be something to watch! wink.gif

-looks at reruns sadly, turns to URAINAH's idea-

My bets on the WGA!

The most recent meeting had an outside negotiator - and the writers did drop what the producers said was the main sticking point. Even with that, the producers wouldn't budge on the other points.

Honestly, I think if the producers just agreed to share a tiny portion of the money they make from advertising on streaming episodes, they could come to an agreement... Of course, I'm nowhere near an insider, but with writers dropping the increase in DVD residuals, that seems to me to be the major sticking point.

That doesn't seem unreasonable to me at all... Writers get residuals if consumers pay for the content - but if it's a business paying for advertising, they don't get anything at all? Come on now... The producers are still making money off of their work. They wouldn't be streaming it and selling advertising otherwise, right? So why not give a tiny cut to the people who made it possible?

I can not believe this. I feel so sick over the whole situation. What the hell is the freakin' problem? These people write your scripts, so give 'em more money! I've been very closely involved in a strike before, my Aunt has worked for Ralph's for around or over 30 years, and you would not BELIEVE how overworked and underpaid the people who work in grocery stores that are a part of the union are. Writers, just like the workers at the grocery stores, are the ones who make it all possible. So I say give them their hacking money and give us our shows back! I mean, girl doesn't live on Dancing With The Stars alone. And it's over half done, so if this goes much further, I'm going to have to go on a strike of my own!

Yes, I have no life outside of TV and Church. I love church, but it's 45 min. 1 hour away depending on traffic, or I would dive headfirst into all manner of things there.

I agree. The WGA made a HUGE concession on the DVD thing, and the producers pretty much spat on them.

I also love the argument "There's no money being made online anyway." ORLY? Then it's no sacrifice to give the writers a cut, is it? 90% of zero is still zero.

I couldn't agree with you more. I mean, I can't live on just Extreme Makeover: Home Edition by itself. Without the writers, shows won't survive. One good thing about this mess: The stars are supporting the writers, so maybe with enough star power, those producers will have to give in. Keep your fingers crossed, and pray we'll get the real season's end in April, NOT December! mad.gif
