Full Version: So uhh... What happened to the newbies?

It's been a few episodes since we've seen anything "recent" from them. Last we saw of the twins they just barely made it into America. Will they really reach New York and find Mohinder and all that other stuff in the next two episodes?

Will Monica become St. Joan in two episodes as well? I kind of feel like it would be pointless to bring in Monica (although she's a great character) if she doesn't tie in with the main story. If she's not involved with the finale, then they should have just saved her for the third volume.
odm
just like last season, they aren't exploring every story in every episode. by the preview after this week's episode i think it's safe to say that they made it to new york, and monica has some part in the Niki storyline.
Eleo
We haven't seen Monica in a long time. I'm actually wondering if she'll be at all relevant in the last two episodes. In volume 1, every character ended up having some impact on the main plot, but Monica, Maya, and Alejandro just seem to be isolated right now.
FrannyFranko
I think Volume Three will be centered around the newbies. Hopefully the strike ends soon so we wont have to wait that long to find out.
vinyyy23
You have to keep in mind the writer's strike kind of messed up the original ending of season 2. Its now several episodes less. So they might of implemented these characters to play out over the next couple of episodes, but with the strike, they might just be put off until later.

Then again, you never know what twist lies ahead that may tie them all into eachother over the next two episodes. Although Monica is still out in left field though, maybe they are just setting her up for next season. Either way you slice it, the plot is getting a lot more intense and the pace has picked up for the best.
LittleMatchGirl
I just figured they introduced Monica and the twins to get us familiar with them, but their stories won't actually get big until volume 3.
aulduron
This volume is about billions of people dropping dead of a virus, but you don't think Maya and Alejandro will be relevant until the next volume?
LittleMatchGirl
Yep. The virus has nothing to do with Maya and Alejandro; they are completely separate death sentences. Plus there are only two episodes left in this volume and the twins story is still in act 1.
CaptPostMod
Tim Kring also suggested in an interview about what he thinks went wrong with this season that he doesn't really like the newbies except Elle.

Seems to me they may be phasing them out.
pawn6545
yeah hopefylly it will last long enough for sylar to be out the rest of the season.

They are driving.. do you really need a permanent cam pf Sylar hitting on Maya as they drive.

BTW, why is the woman always driving?

the way they've done monica is very good, actually.

since all of the start of this volume was slow-paced, they've introduced her, given her a bit of a dramatic arc, and now have set it up so when she next appears she'll be a badass ninja superhero on the streets of new orleans. she's perfectly set now to start volume 3 at full-speed (allowing origin stories to be saved for new people) which is a good thing, since apparantly the majority of people have no taste for slow pacing, even though the slow-pacing of some episodes is what makes these fast-paced climactic episodes so fantastic. if everything went at this pace the major events would need to be increasingly big, and the show would just become ******. see 24.

I don't think the twins have anything to do with the virus, coz tim kring said in that interview that had they shown the virus premonition at the start of the season, maya would have been looked at very differently. but that implied that maya wasn't the cause of the virus. I do think they'll get killed off, although really now they've intro'd them, sylar should kill alejandro and volume 3 can focus on him and maya's dynamic.

Woohoo! More Sylar and Maya!
Alejandro needs to die asap, because I really wanna see where the Sylar/Maya thing is going. And I'm not even just talking about him hitting on her, I wanna see if Sylar starts to regain some of his humanity through starting to care about Maya, if she starts to lose some of her's through Sylars influence, if they become Bonnie/Clyde, if Sylar kills both the twins and becomes "The Bomb" v2.0 w/ built in cure, I mean come on, those are all amazing plot arcs (probably with the potential to have a large part of a season revolving around it), and they havnt even been touched on yet.

I personally wanna see Sylar munch the Wonder Twins brains, do his intuitive apptitude thang, and start a plague that causes you to drip radioactive goop out of your eyes and then explode.
Mr. Kring, I give you Season 3. You dont need the writers, you have me wink.gif

"So uhh... What happened to the newbies?, Maya/Alejandro . . . "

So uhhh . . . who cares!

As for Monica, I hope she come back around, and I hope we find out more about her Granny who I think has some kind of power.
SacredKnight
I'd count on Monica having a much bigger role in Volume 3. I wouldn't hold my breath for the twins doing much though, if either make it out of Volume 2 alive. They said they changed their plans for Volume 3 a lot after the fan criticism so far this year, so even if there were big plans for those two or just Maya, I wouldn't be surprised if they were scrapped. Monica has proven pretty popular so far though, so I can't imagine them getting rid of her.
Aerdna
It's a shame they haven't been utilizing Monica to their fullest; she really is a great character. And they really need to incorporate Nana somehow too, we all know that she's important.

The Wonder Twins on the other hand, I could care less about. It seems like they were originally supposed to be apart of the virus plotline, but now I'm not sure where they're going with it.

That would awesome actually. However, she should only be able to do it when she has a strange metal cylinder in hear ear.

As for the newbies, it bothers me a lot that they're not really succeeding in the show. The reason for Maya and Alejandro is that they're just too...well...emo. It's understandable as that'st he crux of their power, but I think it happens way too often. Also, their story hasn't changed all that much from the get go, with the exception of Sylar. They're going to America, some bad people get in the way, Maya goes bonkers, people die or are incapacitated, they move on to the next place where the same thing happens. The only episode of I've seen so far that held any interest to me with them is Four Months Ago.

Hopefully that'll change soon and they'll infuse some life into their arc by using Sylar in an interesting way.

As for Monica, she's just sadly underused and underdeveloped. Her character could really go places, especially with where she lives. Give her some airtime and let her develop into a strong, moral, passionate hero as she should, and things will get much more interesting.
QuietStorm
I hope Sylar kills all the newbies, except Monica of course. wink.gif

I second that suggestion! I would only like Maya if she turned bad! Also, Syaya (thats right) is no substitute for some good Syhindlar!
Requiem191
i liked maya y alejandro in the beginning... they seemed really interesting! but then we don't hear anything from them for like 2 episodes? that's just bad writing on the writer's part imo...

not saying they had to have an episode all about them, or even a huge part of any episode so far really but, if sylar was always meant to be with the maya plot, then they could have put him in episode freaking 1! if they had written it correctly, it could have flowed fine and we would have had more time to see sylar's story and get more into maya's character... and even then, i would have been fine if they had been connected to sylar in episode 2...

sylar is a big character, whether people like him or not, want him to die a very painful death or be turned good, they like him alot... if he had been introduced sooner in the show, and brought into maya's story sooner, then people would not, imo, dislike maya's story soooo much... it would have fit better the way that elle's character fit with peter's story...

now, i know this seems like a rant that the show took too long and had a slow boring arc... i personally like long story arcs, it's my favorite form of story telling really... but, this volume lasted half as long as the last volume and needed to represent that in terms of how fast or slow to move the story... they could have easily gotten maya and alejandro, along with sylar, to america by about episode 4 or 5... it could have been done... EDIT: and by america i mean in mohinder's apartment and all that, not just across the border...

the virus could have been revealed way sooner and hiro could have come back from the past sooner as well...

people just don't like maya's story because they took too long in giving us the vital bits of the volume that we needed to know... if we had been given the information we know now a few episodes early, then people would definitely like maya's story so much more...

as for monica, her problem is easy to see... they never use her! she's one of the coolest new characters, kinda like the opposite of elle, and she is HIGHLY underused... she doesn't get shown the love lol...

and, she would have so many people rooting for her if they finally started to show her superhero story! a crime fighter in New Orleans that really starts taking down crime? tons of people want to see that!

but, personally, I think monica's situation is a good one that can be used to benefit the next volume... just, sadly, don't use monica anymore, maybe use her to tie micah and niki in more and then just wait til vol. 3 to use her... people will already know who she is, so she won't eat up screen time trying to reveal her past and all that for her origin story, etc...

but as for maya's future... hate to say it cuz she had so much potential... she needs to be scalped, and FAST!

I'm of the mindset that the new characters were intended to play a much larger role in season three and were only to be introduced in season two.
