"The world is not what it seems… People aren't what they seem… Sometimes, nothing is what it seems… friends become enemies… safety becomes danger… people become monsters… but there is one thing that keeps us together… Hope… hope is always what it seems… there is always hope."
Odessa, Texas
Nathan Petrelli turned to his younger brother Peter, and smiled. He then turned to the camera. "I have the ability to -"
Suddenly, two gunshots are heard. Nathan's face etched in shock, and then he fell. Peter caught his older brother as he fell.

Nathan looked blankly at Peter. Everyone around was screaming, and police swarmed the area, but none of this registered in Peter's mind. He was just looking down at his brother, nothing else mattered at the moment.
"Nathan… you have to be OK." Peter said, tears rolling down his face.
"Pe-ter…" Nathan whispered, his words broken as he struggled to speak. "Promise – me."
"Anything, Nathan… what?" Peter said.
Nathan grunted in pain, and took a deep breath. "Promise me.. you will take down the com-pany. Do ever-ything you can…"
"N-Nathan. You are not going to die!" Peter said, his voice trembling.
"Prom-ise me, Pete."
Peter looked at his brother, life slowly leaving his body.
"I promise, Nathan." Peter cried. "I promise."
Peter picked up his brother, and watched the commotion around him, everyone was panicking, looking for someone with the gun. No-one was looking at them. He touched Matt and the three of them disappeared.
Volume Three: Villains
Chapter One – Side Effects
Mohinder, Molly, Maya, Elle and Bob
Brooklyn
"..So then I zapped him! He ran Daddy…but I saved these guys!" Elle told her father. Bob looked over at Mohinder.
"It's true, she saved us all." Mohinder said.
"Well, good work Elle. I guess I have no choice to put you back in the field." Bob said.
Elle embraced her father. "Thank you, Daddy. I won't let you down!"
Bob looked over at Maya. "So, Maya, I heard you have an extraordinary gift."
"It's not a gift." Maya said. "It's only ever been a curse to me. My brother is dead. His killer escaped."
"Not for long, Maya. Sylar has something we need. We have to retrieve Claire's blood, Mohinder. It's our only hope of saving Niki. Elle, I need you to go after Sylar." Bob replied.
"But I have no idea where he went, Dad." Elle replied.
"I'm sure Molly can lend a hand." Bob smiled.
Peter, Nathan, Matt
Manhattan
Peter, Nathan and Matt reappeared at Nathan's house. Nathan's corpse looked straight ahead with a blank stare. Peter placed him on the couch.
"Peter…he's dead." Matt stuttered.
"No!" Peter shouted, "We can still save him… Adam's blood could save lives, it saved Nathan's when I exploded, I can use my blood to heal him."
"But he's already dead!"
"It doesn't matter! I can still save him!" Peter interrupted.
"No…you can't." A voice replied. Peter and Matt turned around to see Angela Petrelli standing there. "Peter, you absorbed Adam's healing power, but you do not have his healing blood. The only two people who can save Nathan are Adam and Claire. We have no idea where Adam is, and by the time we find Claire, it will be too late. You have to let him go, Peter."
Peter felt his world crashing down on him. He collapsed to his knees. Why did his brother take the shot? HE could have taken the shot, and survived.
"He can't be dead, Mum. There must be a way to save him."
"There isn't." Angela sighed. "We can't bring him back."
Matt spoke, "I think…I better leave you two to it. I don't want to be bothering you. I'm sorry… for your loss."
Angela nodded her head and Matt walked straight past her.
**It had to be done…for the sake of the company**
Matt froze on the spot, hearing what Angela had just thought.
"What?" Matt gasped. Angela turned around, confused.
"You knew Nathan was going to get shot, didn't you?" Matt confronted Angela.
Peter stood up. He looked over to his mother and read her mind.
**If Nathan revealed the company…we'd all be in trouble.**
"You Lady!" Peter screamed. "You knew he was going to die!"
Before Peter knew what he was doing, he picked up his mother and threw her against the wall.
"Peter!" Matt shouted "Stop it!"
Peter turned, and with a quick wave of his hand, threw Matt across the room.
"Peter, the company can never be found out!" Angela shouted "People won't accept us for who we are, they will treat us as outsiders… the company, the powers… everything, and it must all stay a secret!"
"No! It's because of you, my brother is dead!" Peter said, his voice growling. "Your own son! I'm sick of cleaning up your mess! As long as I live, I will do everything I can to take down the company!"
"You really don't get it, do you Peter? Nathan had to be killed! If he had stayed alive, then we would have been hunted. Treated like Aliens…and the company. We have done things that we could die for!" Angela yelled.
Peter brushed his hand through his hair. His own mother had betrayed him. He felt a sudden surge of hate for his mother, something beyond anything he had felt before.
"Get out!" Peter screamed. "Get out…or I'll kill you!"
Angela's fear glowed in her eyes. She stood up, and ran out of the door. Peter looked back at Matt, and his anger melted. He had thrown Matt across the room for no reason. He helped Matt up to his feet.
"I'm sorry… I was angry." Peter murmured.
"I understand." Matt replied. "But we need to find out who killed your brother. If we can get them, we can find out everything we need to know about the company… we can get all the information we need."
"How do you suppose we find who did it?" Peter said.
"I don't know. But we need to find him." Matt replied.
Suddenly, horror struck across Peter. He looked at Matt with complete terror.
"What? What is it, Peter?" Matt asked, anxiously.
"Caitlin!" Peter answered "She's still in the future!"
Sylar
Brooklyn
Sylar was sat in an alleyway. He took the needle out of his arm. A rush of excitement flooded Sylar. He felt sudden warmth, and he noticed the gashes in his hands healed themselves. He quickly felt his face; the gashes in his face were healed too. Was it done? Did he no longer have the virus? More importantly, were his powers working?
He looked over the lane, and saw a single can of spinach, already opened and emptied. He held out his hand and concentrated. After a few seconds, the can flung into his hand. He smiled. "I'm back."
Hiro & Ando
Tokyo, Japan
"Did you kill him?" Ando asked in Japanese, referring to Adam Monroe.
"He can never hurt anyone else again." Hiro replied.
"So, you killed him?" Ando asked.
"Adam has lived for 400 years. He's had a lot of experiences, probably done things we couldn't imagine doing. If I killed him, what would it achieve? He has lived a great life, and he would probably not be bothered dying. No, I had to make him suffer. Suffer for years to come. I buried him Ando. Alive. He is buried in a steel casket. And covered in concrete. He is never getting out."
Hiro looked at his friend. Ando smiled back. A sense of achievement rose over Hiro and he couldn't help but smile back.
Adam Monroe
6 Feet Under
Tokyo, Japan
Adam gasped heavily. He could barely breathe, but he couldn't stop breathing. He was barely alive but could not die. The suffering was excruciating. He was stuck. He was never getting out of this hellhole. He was laid to suffer forever.
"Help…me." He gasped, begging someone to hear him.
He closed his eyes, hoping that one day he would get out of here, and he continued to struggle as he breathed.
Peter, Matt and Nathan
Manhattan
"Who's Caitlin?" Matt asked.
"This woman…I left her in the future… before the virus was destroyed. I have to get her. All this commotion made me completely forget about her." Peter said "Stay here… I'll be back as soon as possible."
And Peter disappeared. He reappeared in New York, 2008. He looked around. The city was bustling. People were walking around, entering shops, going into cabs.
"We did it." He said to himself. "We saved the world from the virus."
He looked across the street and saw the building where he and Caitlin were kept before. He entered the homeland security building. Peter looked around. He saw a man, and he recognized him instantly. It was the man who told him about the Shanti virus when he was here last time.
"Excuse me!" Peter shouted.
The man turned and looked at Peter. Peter walked up to him.
"Where is Caitlin?" Peter asked.
The police officer looked at Peter stupidly. "Um…do I know you, sir?"
"Of course you do… you were here… you told me about the virus, and you took Caitlin… deported her." Peter answered.
"What in the blue hell are you talking about, son? I don't know anything about a virus." The officer replied.
"Of course, she was deported." Peter said to himself. "She's in Ireland!" He ran out of the door, and teleported.
Bob & Noah
The Company
"Thank you, Noah." Bob smiled.
"I don't want your thanks. All I want from you is to stay away from my family." Noah replied.
"And we will… so long as the company remains a secret." Bob replied. "Nathan was about to destroy everything we've worked for over the past thirty years, shooting him was the best thing you ever did."
"You disgust me." Noah spat. "I disgust myself. How can you live with yourself, knowing you just killed an innocent man?"
"No, you killed him, Noah." Bob said.
"On your orders." Noah snapped back. Noah turned around and walked out of the door. Bob watched him leave, as he stared in deep thought.
Peter Petrelli
Cork, Ireland
2008
Peter reappeared outside the Wandering Rocks pub. He entered it, it was quite full. In the corner, a group of drunk men were singing some Irish song and one man was shouting "If I… WAS the referee… then I would have sent the bugger off!"
Peter walked up to the bar. No-one he recognised was there. A barmaid came to the front.
"What are ya having?" She asked.
"Caitlin. I need to see Caitlin!" Peter replied. The barmaid froze.
"Caitlin?" She repeated. Peter nodded. "Come around the back." The barmaid said. Peter wasted no time and entered the door into the back of the pub. The barmaid sat down on a chair and Peter sat opposite.
"Caitlin…" She started. She sighed.
"Well, last year, she went to Montreal with some American…" The barmaid continued.
"Yeah, that was me!" Peter replied. The woman looked slightly surprised.
"You? Well then you should be telling us where she is!" The barmaid replied.
"What?" Peter asked.
"She went to Montreal with you last year… next thing we know, she disappears. Since we were the closest thing she has to family, we reported her missing. They wanted some I.D for her. So we went and got her birth certificates and such…but they were gone. Everything. Birth certificates, a copy of her passport, all the information on her…it was gone." The barmaid explained.
"What? It couldn't have just disappeared!" Peter said, raising his voice slightly.
"They disappeared…it's as if... as if, she never existed."
Micah & Monica
New Orleans
The fire blazed as the diner melted into nothing. Firetrucks swarmed the area and the hoses put out the fire. Micah tried to run toward the building but Monica held him back. Firemen ran into the building, looking for any sign of Niki Sanders.
Thirty minutes passed.
Micah sat on the ground, looking straight down, blankly staring as Monica looked down at him. She felt so bad for Micah. She knew what he was going through and it killed her that he had to go through the same thing.
A fireman walked up to them and Monica got to her feet.
"We've searched the building thoroughly." The fireman said.
"And?" Monica replied.
"Well, we can't find her. Not alive. Not dead. Nothing." The fireman explained.
"So, what does that mean?"
"Well," The fireman said, "She either got out, or she was blown up into nothing."
"Oh…" Monica replied. She didn't know what else to say.
"But there's always a body…no matter how damaged, I've always been able to find a body…always." The fireman said. And he walked away. Monica looked over the road to Micah. He was just sitting there. Staring into nothing. Monica sighed, and walked over to him. She embraced him and he broke into tears.
Matt, Nathan & Peter
Manhattan
Peter reappeared in present time Manhattan. Matt Parkman saw him. "Did you find her?"
Peter looked at him, and sighed. "I've done something terrible, Matt."
"Peter? What is it?" Matt asked.
"I've been so stupid. All along I've been trying to destroy that virus. Doing so, caused Caitlin to no longer exist." Peter replied.
"What? How is that possible?" Matt questioned.
"Matt, she's stuck in a future that is no longer going to happen! As far as we're concerned, she no longer exists… and I'm never going to see her again. No-one will." Peter groaned. "It was my time-travelling that caused this…if I had never gone to the future, this would never have had happened."
"Peter, if you had never gone to the future, 93% of the world's population would be dead by next year!" Matt argued. "Going to the future was the best thing that you ever did. You saved us all!"
Peter shouted back, "Maybe… but I've just lost the girl I love! And she's never coming back! As far as I'm concerned, I'm never time travelling again!"
Sylar
Brooklyn
Sylar stuck to the alleyways. He was powerful once more, but he had to get out. That woman with the electrical hands… he wanted to avoid her if he could. He walked into another alleyway and froze.
"You!" He gasped.
"You have something that belongs to us!" Elle replied.
"What? Oh… the blood?" Sylar asked, grinning. "Ha. You're too late, silly girl. I've already used it!"
"No!" Elle shouted. A thunderous bolt of electricity flew out of her hand, but Sylar swiftly avoided it.
"Amazing how much super hearing can help your agility, isn't it?" Sylar said, still grinning.
Elle shot another bolt of electricity, but Sylar again avoided it, and then he picked her up by the throat with his Telekinesis. Elle was slammed against the wall and she groaned in pain.
"It's been a long time… please; forgive me if I'm a bit rusty." Sylar smiled. He pointed his index finger, and moved it across the air. Elle let out shrill screams and then there was silence.
"Thank you, Elle." Sylar said, almost whispering. "Electrokinesis will come in handy."
