Full Version: Why did Eden's power not work on Sylar?

Eden ordered Sylar to shoot himself in this episode, and the naughty scamp blatantly defied her and wrenched her through the glass instead. How did he do this? Why did Eden's power not work on him when it had done in Homecoming?
Stunt
I was wondering that as well.

I think it's because she never actually gave him the gun, so he couldn't do it that moment. And she did say "you're gonna take this gun..." and I guess to take it, he had to break through the glass and try to grab it.

Meh, I dunno.

I don't understand though, he broke through the glass, they came in later, and the glass was all fixed and he was dying on the floor.

She said to Matt that he was going to go and eat donuts - and he did that!

This was explained in the Graphic Novel. Thet shot a load of tranquiliser darts into him as soon as Eden shot herself, and then kept him heavily sedated until he escaped. I'm guessing it was a different cell.

Thanks for explaining that. I'll start reading the novels soon.

Sylar outsmarted Eden by not waiting for her to give him the gun. Instead, he broke through the glass, to Eden's (and everyone else's) surprise, negating her command, to kill her and confiscate her awesome power. She took her own life, shooting herself in the brain, rather than allow Sylar his desired trophy.

But he should have been under her spell as soon as she spoke, like Matt was. But her power seemed to have no effect on him at all.

what graphic novel was that?

i suppose its to do with sylars orginal power 'knowing how things work'...sorta resists being hypnotized//persuaded...he recognises her power , sees how it works, and can thus break it.

its one of those powers where i wonder, just how does that work? then i think about hiro & my brain melts..shame..it was a good brain.

Surely he can't do that? That would mean Matt wuld not be able to read his mind, Molly wouldn't be able to find him etc. I get that he can see if somebody has a power, or if they're "broken", but surely not how to stop them from using it on him?

well it all hinges on edens power, which, lets be fair is vague at best - how does her power work? in what way? Is it like matts? Or is it something voice based, entering the brain that way...personally i think they killed her off because they realised the problems her power would create, and maybe a falling out with the actress...btw i might have made that last part up..

but back on track..

i reckon, now this is not gospel by any stretch, that sylar, by understanding how her power works old gabe was able to prepare for it & lessen its effects at least. I can't see any other explanation googly.. blink.gif ...its either that or eden wanted to die..i mean why didn't she just shoot him through the glass?

MrsGoogy,

It was they way in which she gave her order. He was to act only after she did something, namely, upon her passing the gun into his power damping (not) cell through the drawer. Sylar acted before she could accomplish this all important very simple act. Unexpectedly, (using his tk!) he suddenly broke through the glass, sieging the initiative, even while she still held the gun! He had outwitted her in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

It's just because well, when she told Matt to get donuts, she said "go get donuts". She told Sylar "I'm gonna put this gun in here, and your gonna take it and blow your brains out". The command activates once she puts the gun in there, but she never got a chance, since Sylar attacked her.

Naughty rascal.
MrsGoogly
So the consensus is that Eden's power only works when giving a direct command. I'm not sure I buy that. She must know how her power works, and she knows how brutal Sylar is, so why would she take a chance on him being able to combat her ability? He did not seem affected by her command at all, whereas other people she's "persuaded" (mainly Matt) go into a trance as soon as she puts the deep voice on!

I also don't think she was killed off because the writers did not know how her ability works. I think she was killed off to shock people, and to show how vicious Sylar really is. Plus, it really really wound Mr Bennet up!

Believe it, MrsGoogly; Sylar outwitted Eden. She slipped up in the way in which she worded her command. For, he was to kill himself after she passed him the gun. Had she said..."Take this gun!..."
Still, it would have worked were it not for Sylar having played possum. You see, he had his powers.

Powerless, Sylar would have had no recourse. The power damping field that was suppose to defeat Sylar's powers (while in the cell) did not work as designed (he had figured out how it worked and defeated it...regaining full access to his awesome arsenal of powers and laid in wait (like the spider in his web) for his unsuspecting target...Eden!). It was this element of surprise that foiled Eden's foul-hearty plan.

Come closer, MrsGoogly...Now, listen carefully...it was Sylar who had planned to kill Eden and take her magnificent godsend! Sylar, having regained his power, set a trap for the unsuspecting Eden. And when she foolishly ignored Noah's repeated warnings to keep her distance from Sylar, it cost her...her life!

Having set in place his masterful, dastardly trap, he sprang into action most unexpectedly! She never knew what hit her. Still, in a last heroic effort, she denied Sylar his prize...her powerful, deadly, irresistible godsend!

I don't think he laid a trap for her. He only recognised her when she walked into his cell, he did not recognise her at the school. He just saw an opportunity and took it.

Don't even get me started on the dampening field the Company supposedly has. Why not turn it into a weapon? Why did it not work on Adam and Peter? Is there a switch somewhere?

More importantly, why do you keep calling the abilities godsends?

MrsGoogly,

Sylar remembered what her 'power' was from their encounter at the school and wanted it! He could have escaped, had he wanted too. But he hung around on the chance that he might have the opportunity to snare an unsuspecting Eden. All she had to do was say "DIE!" and Sylar would have been finished. Her arrogance got the best of her!

They tried the damping field; it didn't work. Eden and a geneticist were both killed and Noah captured because Sylar defeated the so called damping field. Enter the "Haitian pills".

When I say "godsends" I've communicated effectively, yes? It's just another term for their "great god-given gifts" and my little idiosyncrasy.
