The main reason for the Report button is to call the Moderators attention to a thread or post.
Yep. It's that simple.
Folks don't get into "auto" trouble if they are reported. Heck, please self report a thread if you messed up something or need some help from us. It is why we are here.
If you are not sure or are scared to use this feature, please report this post. Yes, I said report this post. I want ya'll to understand how the process works.

Isn't the button self-explanatory?

In theory, yes.
However, there are always folks who may not know how the process works and don't want to get a person in trouble. I just wanted to make it clear that reporting a post is not a bad thing to do and can be quite helpful.
For example, let's say "you" start a thread and there is a misspelling in the topic title. Members cannot edit titles, Mods can. Or "you" start a poll and realize that you forgot an option. If the member tries to edit the poll, all of the previous votes will be lost. Mods can edit a poll and keep the previous results.

Part of any fear of Reporting a post is the message the following, which appears on the form
QUOTE
Enter your report
Please note: The moderator will be made aware of the link to the post and the topic title.
This form is to be used ONLY for reporting objectional content, etc and is not to be used as a method of communicating with moderators for other reasons.

Thank you for pointing that out, SVD. I haven't reported a post in so long that I honestly forgot about the wording. I'll look into changing it so it is more appropriate.
