So I'm a racist now? You can kiss my ******. I notice you didn't provide any information on exactly how they're stereotypes.

Let me educate you.

Hiro should speak perfect English. Growing up as the son of one of the richest men in Asia, he would have received tutoring and at the very least would have been taught English in school. I'm Asian, grew up here, but worked over there for a few years. Everyone of status speaks English and most fluently. Also, Hiro loves American pop culture and he would have the exposure and motivation to learn English.

So this misconception forces Masi, who speaks perfect English, to throw on this bad accent all the time. Imagine a well-spoken African America actor, like Terrance Howard, playing a lawyer who speaks in gutteral ebonics. That's what they force Masi to do, and it's just playing to a racial stereotype.

Also, how about the fact that Hiro and Ando are constantly portrayed as physically weak? Girls beat them up. It feeds into a stereotype. Look at how ripped Ando is in that picture above! He shouldn't get intimidated easily.

There are more, but this is honestly not the place for it.
Brennan
Or they're of Asian decent, so the writers decided to give them Asian accents... I'm not saying that you're wrong because I can definitely see where you're coming from. But at the same time its not fair to call it a stereotype either.

If you're from Asia, you may know how to speak English perfectly, but at the same time there's also a chance that you may not. These are two people that where born and raised in Japan, never went anywhere, never did anything. It's not really hard to believe that they don't know English. (There's a lot of things that Hiro could have due to his heritage, but his father hasn't given them to him because in his eyes he hasn't earned them.) The whole situation may be a real world inconsistency, but not necessarily a stereotype.

and as far as them being physically weak, all I can say is that they are timid characters. They're office men not really equip to handle outside confrontation (the kind that they've come into contact with). Plus,There was more going on in terms of the situation when they got "handled by a girl" (Ando being love struck, Hiro thinking that he could do better by himself, The world being in jeopardy), and some may say that you're being a little sexist... why do they have to be physically weak for a girl to beat them up? also, you're attributing Jason's characteristics with that of Ando. The fact of the matter is, these are just characters. Do they have qualities that could be considered stereotypical?? Sure, but if you try hard enough you can find these qualities in any character, form any form of media, from any genre.

So ya thats what I think, please don't take it the wrong way.
ruppan
Brennan, I may not agree with you, but I appreciate your effort in writing an intelligent response without personal attacks.

My big problem is that Asian males in Hollywood are either portrayed as martial artists or geeks, like Hiro and Ando. There's no normal Asian guys. So when you have a few prominent Asian characters, and they fall into one of those two categories it's part of a racist.

Think about this, African Americans have the highest incarceration rate in this country. That's a statistic that can be verified through the Department of Justice's website. What if every African American on T.V. were portrayed as an ex-con? Wouldn't that be racist? It happens to be true that more African Americans per capita go to jail than any other race, but constantly portraying them as ex-cons would be racist. (Dang, now that I wrote that, I kind of realize what a stereotype DL was!)

Also, I've known a ton of wealthy kids in Asia. All of them spoke English as well or better than my Jewish and caucasian friends here in NYC. Most went to college and university here or in Europe. It's just unrealistic that a person with Hiro's background wouldn't speak English. They learn it whether they want to or not, and most want to due to American pop culture.

Funny. The personal attacks came from your end of the convo, not anyone else's.

That being said- enough with the crap. Let the thread get back on topic.

Sorry about staying on this conversation, but how is Ando a geek? He's portrayed (in Season One certainly), as the Yin to Hiro's Yang. He told Hiro to teleport into the Girl's Bathroom; used Niki's website; falls in love with the most beautiful woman. How is that a 'geek'?

And, even if Hiro recieved the best teaching available, there's no reason that he would have a natural talent in speaking lanuages. English is an extremely difficult lanuage to learn. Also, Kaito wasn't the sort to give his son a head - start in life - he wanted Hiro to prove himself to him, and placed him at the bottom so he could work his way up.

This is a joke right? Ando's a perv (and there's nothing wrong with that!), but perv tendencies are kinda geeky.

Having an internet porn fetish does not make one cool.

Tracing Nikki to her house - not cool.

Wanting to sneek into the girl's bathroom is high school behavior. (And I'm pretty certain nothing sexy is going on in most women's bathrooms anyway. Think Harold & Kumar.)

Falls in love with the most beautiful woman...haHaHaha...more like got used by a giant tranny looking hooker. Yeah...that makes him cool..HAAAHAhAHAHA

Sorry to get back to the other topic, but...

Just kidding! I may have to make some revisions to my list after last night's episode.
Citizen
Good thing I never had Hiro on there when I came up with the list. Linderman and Daphne stay.
flyboynathan
Eh, I specified Season 1 Hiro, so I think I'm safe.

My list remains untouched, but I need a reason to love Mohinder again - this injection is taking away all his good qualities. I'm hopeful that he'll make it through alright...

Sylar still feels like a tool at the moment. I hope he does something awesome soon or he's going to get boring quickly.

I totally agree about Mohinder. I've always loved him, but I have no idea what he's doing right now or why it's important.

I totally disagree about Sylar. biggrin.gif He's just getting better and better as far as I'm concerned.

Here is my top 10 (explanations for top 5) with respect to only the characters and their roles in the storyline, and nothing about the acting or how "cute" or "hawt" the actor is. Also, some of the characters either interesting and become uninteresting or start uninteresting and become interesting.

1. Noah Bennett - In a story about supernatural powers, there needs to be a couple main characters who are just plain human. These characters are often the most interesting characters. Noah is that character. He is the smartest, most determined and strong-willed, and often one of the most feared and dangerous despite having no powers. This show is nothing without the horn-rimmed glasses.

2. Sylar (S1 & S2) - If you had Sylar's powers and could take other peoples' powers by killing them, would you? If not, would it not tempt you? Maybe Sylar wasn't that bad of a guy, but a touch of evil is what pushed him over the edge into becoming a monster. I think Sylar got absolutely ravaged in Season 3 thus far, but the concept behind the character is awesome.

3. The Haitian - In a story about supernatural powers, there needs to be a trump card against any power. With the ability to nullify the powers of anyone in his vicinity, the Haitian is that trump card. This also makes him Noah's perfect partner and perhaps one of Sylar's only weaknesses. The best part about him is, while you're sure that his motives are good, you never really know where his loyalty lies. He's seemingly loyal to Noah but remember in Season One when Noah tells him to erase Claire's memory, but in the end, he tells Claire that he refuses to and has his reasons. He is an enigma and one of the most interesting characters. Maybe they will develop his character and reveal his true motives.

4. Peter Petrelli (S1 & S2) - Peter is Sylar's humble and altruistic counterpart. He takes powers much more easily than Sylar does, but doesn't lust for them like he does. He is selfless and pure and perhaps the best contrast to Sylar who is selfish and pure evil. The thing they have in common is that Peter's character also got completely ravaged in Season 3, destroying the character that they took two seasons to develop. Again, awesome character design.

5. Issac Mendez - Not only do I absolutely love the paintings (I actually have a hand-drawn replica of the mushroom-cloud mural on a canvas, hanging on my bedroom wall), but the idea behind his power was very cool. This was the source of much of the suspense that made Season 1 (and some of Season 2) interesting. Hopefully, they'll find a way to bring back this kind of excitement to Season 3, with or without paintings...

6. Adam Monroe
7. Matt Parkman (S2 & S3)
8. Mohinder Suresh (S1 only)
9. Claire Bennett
10. Kaito Nakamura

QUOTE (flyboynathan @ Oct 13 2008, 04:33 PM) *
I'm curious as to how many people liked Nathan before the finale. Even better, before the second half of Season 1.

Well, I definitely liked him before the Season I finale (which I assume you're referring to), but I wasn't really following Heroes during the first half of season I. I was sort of occasionally tuning across and watching an episode or a few minutes of one here or there during the first half, and got hooked midway through the season. As I recall, Nathan became pretty well officially my favorite character after the whole reveal about his deal with the FBI and the subsequent interaction with Linderman. I was extremely fascinated by his character, and was rooting intensely for him to turn out good and do the right thing in the end.
Saviour
Hmm tough one.

10. Jessica
9. Charles Deveaux
8. Ando
7. Kaito
6. Matt
5. Sylar
4. Elle
3. Linderman
2. Adam
1. Angela
MrsGoogly
As of the last episode I watched:

1. Adam - he ensured Hiro matured; he's the oldest known Hero; he was completely wasted in S3 sad.gif
2. S1 Sylar - I was so tempted not to include Sylar because of his character assassination in S3. But in S1 he was the best villain ever. Incredibly creepy and scary. Wonderful flipside to Peter.
3. Mr Bennet - Always fantastic! He wouldn't want, should never have, doesn't need any powers!
4. Monica - the only female Hero who loved her power and didn't whinge! I can only be thankful she disappeared and wasn't killed off.
5. Claude - I miss Claude!
6. Matt - Matt has been consistently everyman and likeable. He's also one of the few shining things about S3 for me.
7. Elle - leaving the episode "Villains" aside, I love Elle! There aren't enough female psychos on TV!
8. Mrs Bennet - Mrs Bennet is one of the few characters with consistent and believable character development. I love her devotion to her family. She's one of the best things about S3 (which probably means she's doomed!).
9. S1/S2 Hiro - I loved Hiro's development throughout the first two series'. His wonderful enjoyment, honour and naivety in S1, then his forced growing up in S2 because of Adam. Not liking his regression in S3 (pre last night's ep!).
10. Bob or Molly - I love these two, and miss them both. The Bishops were the perfect anti-Bennets. And little Molly made the House of M.

10. Hiro

9. Parkman

8. HRG

7. Nathan

6. Adam

5. The Haitian

4. Angela

3. Claude

2. Mohinder

1. Sylar
SaberProductions
Okay, my top 10. (as of season 3)

10). Arthur Petrelli - He's a great villain, better than Adam was last season. Much better. His connections to the main characters make his character complex and unpredictable.

9). Matt Parkman - He kind of gets on my nerves sometimes, but then he does something to redeem himself.

8). Mohinder Surresh - He would have been closer to the top of my list, but he's turned into quite a little monster this season. I do still enjoy his narration, though.

7). Claire Bennet - The cheerleader is a great character, however, her teen angst can get annoying. She is the wild-card when it comes to the actions of HRG, and probably the bravest of all the Heroes.

6). Nathan Petrelli - Strong, calm Nathan gives the characters a rock to hold on to. Or, at least, he has until now. It's interesting to see him so shaken.

5). HRG - Noah Bennet has been one of the most intriguing characters of the whole series. He is both loving father and Company agent. He's also probably the most morally gray of all the characters.

4). Sylar (Gabriel Gray) - A bad boy turned good. I love redemtion stories, and Sylar is such an amazing character this season. I used to want to see him die, and now I'm like "No! Please don't die, Sylar!"

3). Peter Petrelli - He's one of my perenial favorites. Despite his dumb moments, Peter is the one character who will always follow his heart. He is the type of person who wants to help everyone, and I too am like that, so I identify with him a lot.

2). Hiro Nakamura - Okay, aside from the fact that he's just adorable, Hiro is another character I identify with. He's the funny the show needs, and it's also amusing to see America through the eyes of a Japanese comic book geek.

AND..

1). Angela Petrelli - Bet that was a surprise! Angela has been my favorite character this season because she has been the most interesting character of all! She's the strong new leader of the Company, and she has made lots of changes. Also, her love for her sons shines through, even though she can seem harsh at times. She is thouroughly complex, and easy to sympathize with, since she has to make hard decisions as the leader of a company at war, and a mother.

Yeah Monica was a great character and I hope she'll come back in Fugitives. It would be awesome if she came back ,and because of the title of the next volume, went all secret mask and St. Joan. Like some mysterious vigilante that no one knows, while the other heroes are being hunted down. Like Spiderman: hunted down while in costume but can go back to a normal life as Monica. That would be an interesting way to bring her back.

They could explain and say she wasn't being a hero all this time because, of the Death of Niki and her abduction by that gang.

Hey, that actually worked!! In my experience, telling people to shut up is the least effective way to get them to do so, but I just looked over the posts and they actually let you have the last word. Impressive.

7). Claire Bennet - The cheerleader is a great character, however, her teen angst can get annoying. She is the wild-card when it comes to the actions of HRG, and probably the bravest of all the Heroes.

Hmm. I'm not sure you can compare the bravery of people who can't (basically) get hurt vs. people who can get hurt. So I don't really count Claire, Peter, Sylar etc. as being as brave as they appear, because they know it's not easy for them to die. Think about how Adam used to be a total coward who got everyone else to do the fighting for him until he discovered he could regenerate and then started to become a hero. So I would say characters like HRG or Matt are the bravest because they fling themselves into dangerous situations to protect others without having a defensive power. On the other hand Peter did sacrifice himself in Homecoming before he could heal.

Wow, it's pretty hard to make a list, but I'll try. (I think I will mostly ignore S2 for this, since pretty much everyone got on my nerves that season).

10. DL: Mostly because his power was so cool, especially the way he used it to kill Linderman. His death was ridiculous, though. Writers, how could you end the guy who can let objects pass through him with a bullet?
9. Linderman: my favorite villian so far, because he really believed what he was doing was right, in some warped way. I'd take some of his pot pie any day. Santatongue.gif
8. Elle: Her face in that scene with Sylar where she's pretending to be the damsel in distress with the rental car guy (after the guy says "I should kill you right now", she makes this HILARIOUS expression like "hey, maybe that's a good idea!") single-handedly put her on my list. RIP, Elle.
7. Sylar: Ugh, he is so creepy. But also funny and very smart, and his battles between good and evil are always interesting.
6. Zach: I miss him! He was such a good reality dose for Claire's overdramatic tendencies.
5. Daphne: Her expressions crack me up, although she's a little too proud of her ability (can you run fast, Daphne? oh no, I got it, you can run really, really fast. Thanks for the third reminder).
4. Charlie: such a sweet character, and my favorite love interest on the show by far.
3. Claude: I love his cynicism, how he makes fun of Peter, and the invisibility power (SO COOL).
2. Noah: I like his dry way of speaking and the way he'll go from attentive father to cold-blooded killer the second he snaps his cellphone closed.
1. Peter: despite my better judgement in terms of acting ability (if I was making a list of my favorite actors it would have turned out very differently), I'd put Peter as my favorite character, because I think his death would bother me the most. He's so lovable, and besides having multiple abilities is cool. And (rewatching the first season) I'm enjoying all his snide comments.

Can I make a very brief hate list? Santatongue.gif

1. West: flying makes him cool, right? Wrong.
2. Maya: Please wear something that actually functions as clothing.

10.) The Haitian- His presence!

9.) Stephan Canfield- I don't think I've ever cared about a character so much that was only on one episode.

8.) Claude- Because sometimes Peter needs to be knocked out Santatongue.gif .

7.) Elle- I love when writers have the guts to make a character truly, deeply flawed and human. That's how I saw Elle.

6.) Daphne- She is something of a street erchin . I like her bluntness and sense of mischief. She was the only one with enough common sense to realize "Lindermen" wasn't real. Maybe one of the few really strong female characters.

5.) Hiro Nakamura- Just when I think he is becoming irrelevent or redundent, he does something adorable and touching. He is the most pure character. I love his comicbook wisdom.

4.) Peter Petrelli- I love him. I just do. So there. Like heroesnut said, if he died I think I would fall into some sort of PPP (post-peter petrelli) depression.

3.) Nathan Petrelli- Because I love that sap with a gruff exterior. I like his sardoniac sense of humor, his shrewdness and his protectiveness.

2.) HRG- BAMF.

1.) Angela Petrelli- possibly the most complex character on television and played by the amazing Cristine Rose.

Sylar - I need to see him get his comeuppance ASAP. He should have died at the end of S1.

Agreed

Hmm as for my list im going to have to give it some thought lol
be back in a few hopefully with pictures
TessaBlues
1. Peter Petrelli - Never has dreamy-eyed idealism worked for me the way is has when it comes to Peter. Well that and the fact that he like the most powerful thing walking the planet.

2. Elle Bishop(before the retcon the revolved around Sylar killed her character) She was simply unapologetic for the things she did and I loved that. I got the impression that we weren't supposed to really like her but I know I ended up loving her and she will be missed. One of the bright spots of Season 2.

3. Angela Petrelli - the complexity just speaks for itself.

4. Nathan Petrelli - the glorious ****** himself. He's such a softieunderneath that solid exterior.

5. Claude Rains - another glorious ****** that I would love to come back, even if jsut for a short arc.

6. D.L Hawkins - I honestly wish they would have killed Niki off and kept him becasue to me he was just so much more awesome and a much more intriguing and engaging character.

7. Noah Bennet - morally grey bad***.

8. Sylar - only to be loved when he is at his sinister best.

9. Claire Bennet - she kind of awesome by default because of her power and even though her teen angsting can get on my nerves sometimes I still have much love for the girl. Plus she drove her would be rapist into a wall and even though she felt guilty about it the creep totally deserved it.

10. The Haitian - there is so much mystery that surrounds him and even though they only release little bits of info about him at a time it doesnt take away from his awesomness for me.

Honerable Mrntions

Eden McCain
Daphne Millbrook
Hiro Nakumura -he's adorable
Future Peter
Future Hiro

dcg
no photos, sorry.

1. HRG - He is the heart and soul of the story. Definitely THE Company Man and at the same time Loving Father. HRG does not put up with anyone or anything. He is smart, decisive, fast, and all human.
2. Angela - Best actress on the show. Angela's character is really complex. She's gone all the way from a sox thief to THE BOSS at the Company.
3. African Issac - Usturu or something like that for a name. Too Cool, too smart, and kind. AWESOME character.
4. Peter - I hope that they show that he truly was a Boy Scout. Eagle Scout would be best. Uncompromising LOVE for everyone.
5. Sylar / Gabriel - So conflictingly evil. Great Actor.
6. Daphne - great character in that I love her sense of humor and her exaggerated upper body movement. Swinging shoulders. (Wasn't surprised by her having polio. It could have also been ceribal palsy.)
7. Isaac (when he was drugged out) - victimized by his own power and redeemed himself before his end.
8. Hiro/Ando (can't split them up) - Much needed Laughter when needed.
9. Charlie - So gentle. Lovely woman in every way.
10. Arthur - We really needed someone to cause Sylar to sway a bit in self confidence.

Also - 11. Sandra Bennett. another strong loving woman.
12. Dale (super hearing) - I just loved her character. Really sorry to see her go in only one episode.

I can only think of 9

9: Jessica Sanders

She was crazy, she was bad ****** and took no prisoners!

8. Sandra Bennet

When Sandra was first shown during season 1, she was flaky goofy, and kind of an airhead. Then they stopped portraying her that way and she showed how strong and smart of a lady she was.

7. DL Hawkins

DL was totally underused, and his death was totally pointless. He was a good guy who would of done anything for his son or Niki.

6. Matt Parkman

Matt really annoyed me most of season 1. He was boring and I hated Janice. Then he came into his own in the little time he was shown in the awful season 2. He also was one of the few characters they didn't ruin during this season.

5. Peter Petrelli

I have a love/hate relationship with Peter. He can be an annoying whiner a lot of the time, but he also has a good heart. I like his relationship with Nathan so I guess thats why he is higher on the list.

4. Tracy Strauss

Tracy was awesome. She was tough but had a soft side to her. She was a good decision to have on this season

3. Angela Petrelli

She is fierce, that is all.

2. HRG

He kicks ******, he is well written, and never disappoints.

1. Nathan Petrelli

He's been my favorite since the beginning. He is such a complex character that always fascinates me. I am disappointed in how the writers messed up his character this volume. It came out of nowhere. I didn't mind him becoming the villain but they gave no reason. I like the way his characters is going now. His relationships with Tracy, Nathan,Claire, and Angela are the most interesting to me. I still think that he has a lot to offer the show.

10. Matt Parkman

Matt's an everymans hero that's easy to relate to. Even though he has a awesome power he is still a "real" man, with fears and failures. He doesn't have it all figured out. Plus, well, he is awesome when it comes to getting laughs and the actor makes this character REALLY good and believable, for the most part.

9. Donna Dunlap

Was REALLY sad to see her go because I enjoyed her character amidst the whole crazy ease(ez or something) dropper thing. Her power wasn't over powered but VERY useful.

8. Kaito Nakamura

Hiro's dad and eventually his mentor. Didn't like him too much at first (was a lot like my dad, a bit distant), but once he started taking a bigger interest in Hiro I thought that his character really started to shine. Like a lot of people said, this is one character that didn't over stay his welcome with some weird story arc to keep his character alive.

7. Claire Bennet

Had to hunt for that picture a bit, but well worth it. Gets two honorable mentions on this list without naming them laugh.gif Anyway, I understand that Claire is still a teenager and, therefore, a bit annoying; however, if Claire was a really mature 16-17 year old throughout the series it wouldn't have been believable or right for the part. I like the recent growth in her character and hope they continue to do more with her.

6. Matt Parkman

Matt a second time? you ask. Heh, there are two Matt Parkmans and they both appear on the list. Can't find a picture of "baby touch and go," the cute little guy, but nonetheless this kid has the potential to be a cool little character. Imagine if he gets put into the hands of Sylar when he's cranky. Can anyone say an unhappy Sylar when he finds powers (potentially) nullified?

5. Hiro Nakamura

Yatta! laugh.gif

Well, needless to say I've been sold on Hiro for a while. He's been through a lot but has, essentially, stayed the same lovable Hiro despite many reasons to become the bitter Hiro from the future. Many like "Future Hiro" because he's a tough guy, yet that tough guy was VERY scarred on the inside and had a out look on life that just... doesn't fit Hiro fully. Heck, you can see "Hiro" come out of "Future Hiro" when he got the chance to be around Ando again. Anyway, I love this character, he and Ando team for good comic relief while generally on a serious mission.

4. Peter Petrelli

Again, picture a way to get a honorable mention without mentioning his name. Peter is a lot of what drew me into the show. Very loving, conistently tries to do the right thing and, well, has a cool power. Sure, he's a bit nerfed now, but nonetheless it's still pretty cool to be able to absorb any ability from a person he touches. Maybe, if his power stays the same, he goes on the "Rogue" path and starts to learn to recall them after the fact. Anyway, he's still a driving force for the show and the one regular I wouldn't want to see go.

3. Anna Korolenko

Yes, the Anna from the istory and graphic novels. She's been an great character to follow, going from a helpless character that was afraid of her power to a confident young lady that has accepted the fact that she has this powerful and dangerous ability. She's had character growth that I wish ALL the shows characters had...

2. Rachel Mills

Ahh, Rachel. A strong lady, trained in combat with a cool ability. She, too, has gone through a lot of growth and will hopefully continue to get that chance. Would LOVE to see her join the main cast next season, but from comments I've read from the writers I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, here's to a great character that's appeared in every phase of the shows experience!

1. Hana Gitelman

Had fun getting that picture thumbsup.gif Anyway, Hana is hands down my favorite character. Started reading about her from heroes wiki and then went and read the GN's, unfortunately starting with "the Death of" novels. Anyway, when I found out she was Israeli/Jewish that just cemented the character in my heart (am a Christian and love the Jews). Was REALLY disappointed when they coped out on her death (1 her file was too small to contain her whole being 2 she could have still been restored after deletion even if the hard drive went through hell, as long as some of it is in tact). Anyway, she was a great character, one of the few strong willed, able females in the Heroesverse.
