So maybe this has already been asked but I don't get how Sylar can take Elle's power and yet she still retains that power, but when Arthur took Peter's power he did not retain any of his powers.

Is it because Arthur has learned how to take others powers completely and Sylar has not learned this yet?

It just strikes me as odd, that Sylar just now learned how to take a person's powers without killing them, using only empathy, and for some reason he does not end up just taking the power completely away??
It seems like if he just learned how to do this that it would simply take all of the person's powers not just a little.

Well two things

1. Sylar absorbed Elle's power through empathy, like Peter's power. Therefore, she kept her power, and he got it as well.

2. He did not want to steal her power, nor kill her, because he was letting her get out all her anger, and he felt sorry for what he had done to her.

Arthur wasn't teaching Gabriel to be like himself. He was teaching Gabriel to be like Peter.
