what's up with, as Hiro called him, "Mr. African Issac" (because I can never remember his name) showing up at the end? Did Daphne run back in time and save him too before Arthur had the chance to kill him? I don't understand the purpose of bringing him back, except that Issac's sketch book pretty much serves no purpose now that Hiro's been retrieved from the past. I suppose he'll be guide again for volume 3?
I wish they'd find a new t-shirt for him though- he's been wearing the same one for 3 months.

I liked that. It gives us the hint that that storyline isn't over yet. What is he still hanging around for? Is he a reminder to Matt that Daphne still might die? Is he an illusion projected by the Turtle to remind Matt to feed him?
Only time will tell.

I felt it was more of him being there to congratulate Matt and Hiro on a job well done, like a ghost of the past, nothing really to be taken seriously. Maybe he really is back and surprise us all.

His presence is more of a spiritual presence, that's all! Ok, I'm pretty sure some people don't like that kind of idea in a sci-fi show, but African-Isaac has been a really strong guide for Hiro and Matt, two of the four characters in the building now. He was, somehow, part of the whole ''save the world'' thing.
It's kinda like when we saw it with Matt getting to Angela! Makes no sci-fi sense, because it doesn't have to. It's just that he's a guide for Matt!
Now, I say that, but maybe there is a sci-fi explanation to it, in which case we'll have to wait 'til next Volume to find out! :p

Actually Matt could be just 'seeing' him.
and on the show a week or more has past until it skipped three weeks ahead.

Too funny- I bet that turtle hasn't eaten for days..
I kind of figured its metaphorical and not really that he's BACK back, but with this show, you never know...

Usutu... illusion?
What is Usutu doing in New York? As we all know, he died several episodes ago. Unless it's an illusion created by Matt, but what purpose would that serve?

Either somebody's showing this to Matt, Usutu is doing this from beyond the grave, or Matt is seeing this himself for some reason.
That, or the Turtle is casting an illusion to remind Matt he needs to be fed.

It's probably the turtle. ;)

I'm pretty confident that it was just a vision, like when Matt saw him in the Primatech building and chased after him. Just an attempt by the writers to add relevance to Matt's trip to Africa.

Matt has "seen" Usutu since his death ... methinks it's an embedded part of his spirit walk.

2) "Usutu seemed to be a much more effective precog than Isaac, and Isaac was able to predict his own death. Did Usutu allow himself to die as part of a plan to defeat Arthur?"I think it would be better plan if he were alive. But, those precogs can't seem to avoid their own deaths. It's a terrible power. The question that you really need to be asking is why Usutu keeps on appearing to Matt. Is it part of Usutu's power or Matt's?

i'm with the majority here. i think usutu was more of, say, obi-wan, yoda, and anakin appearing as ghosts to luke at the end of return of the jedi.

I've been thinking about this since the first time he popped up randomly in an earlier episode. I read somewhere that after the eclipse everybody's powers were supposed to come out in full.
This is just a theory, but do you think it's possible that Matt's powers could have 'evolved' again like they did the first time? is it possible that he hear/communicate with spirits of those who are dead? that sounds slightly far fetched, even to me, but the way this volume shaped up I wouldn't be surprised.

in one of the writer chats, didnt they say that matt seeing usutu was "significant" and there was a definitive reason why he was seeing him? I guess therell be more than just running going on in fugutuves.

I hope they won't rip off Marvel with the Watcher = Usutu, When the watcher appears, something of great importance happens.

This is the path that I was thinking down too, but more to do with Ando's power amplifying power forcing Matt's power to "evolve". Given that Daphne could time travel in combination with Ando's power, maybe Matt's telepathy gives him the ability to communicate with the dead, when combined with Ando's power. Maybe everything he heard in that moment after being jolted by Ando were the souls of all the people that have died in Isaac's loft. There have been quite a few.

I liked that shot a lot. It's one of the things lingering around for volume four. It's Matt's ability evolving, but what exactly is Matt doing?
EDIT: Ion, it happened in It's Coming first.

We don't really know what Usutu's power was, assuming he had one. His precog power could have come about the same way it did for Matt and Hiro, eating his hyena dung paste, which he said has been in his family for a very long time.
I know when Matt first meets him, Usutu activates the precog power without being seen to consume anything, but that could simply be a result of his consuming it regularly.

Perhaps this is Utusu on a spirit walk prior to his death. At each of the scenes that he has painted of Matt, it would be interesting if Utusu was there but couldn't be seen until Matt was enhanced by Ando and this was a lingering effect.

As of now, the only known precog in the show is Angela. However, Matt, Daphne, Hiro, and Ando have shown that they need a precog to direct their actions, relying upon Isaac and now Utusu to get them where they need to be. Now, Utusu is appearing in Matt's mind or visions to once again guide the heros in stopping some future event that they need a precog to warn them about so they have a path on which to start trying to stop it.

It actually is. I think it's the most likely idea.
