What do you guys think the watch may be about? they did focus on it a little bit more than they should of.

Well, he did give it back to Angela at the end, so I guess it was for that. And when you say Lost, are you talking about the watch Jin had to deliver?

Traditionally, and almost now it's known as a clique or a symbol - when a man retires he is given a watch. The watch (in this story) then becomes a narrative symbol of sorts and by giving the watch back at the end of the episode it was a symbol within the script and to the audience that Noah wasn't retiring from being a Company man any time soon.

yeah, because the watch had another meaning to it, so maybe this watch does as well? After all with 20 years of putting his life on the line and hunting down those who were dangerous, he gets a watch for his troubles?

Ah I didn't realize that about retirement. That's really interesting and actually explains a lot that I was confused about!

I loved the tie-in with the Sylar watch from season one. I was half expecting it's face to be shattered when he gave it back to her.

It had nothing to do with Sylar.

Of course not but I bet at least one of the writers thought it should be a white metal to trigger the association for people like me. :-)

I honestly think they we're thinking its the universal retirement gift.

Remember when the gold watch was a metaphor for retirement from a corporate culture that cared for its workers during those years between wedding and Winnebago?

As we saw in color it was even a gold watch.

A gold watch is a common retirement gift. In fact, the gold watch has become the generic symbol of retirement.

In some countries a gift of a gold-cased pocket watch is traditionally awarded to an employee upon his or her
retirement. In that capacity, a "gold watch" has become a cultural symbol alluding to retirement, obsolescence, and old age.

In color it looked gold, but that's not the point, I'm trying to explain the old culture symbol of giving a man a watch when he's leaving the business and why he gives it back - representing he's not.

As Freud once said, sometimes a watch is just a watch.
Or something like that.

I think I wasn't paying attention somewhere towards the end there because I didn't notice him giving the watch back to Angela (though I'll take your word for it that he did).

It was a huge part of it. He gets up. Angela looks over. She see's the watch. She picks it up. Opens the box. Looks at it, tries not to smile. She looks off to where Noah walked away and we fade out on Cris's great face.

I don't think this is as mysterious as everyone is making it out to be.
Watches are common retirement gifts, or something you get for being at a company 10-20 years
what else are you going to give a grown man? ring? Bracelet? Flowers? NO! you give him a watch
him not taking the watch was his refusal to be ready to submit to a life of crossword puzzles with no action..the watch is symbolic of retirement and Noah just isn't ready for that yet
mystery solved!

darkcervantes - thank you for backing me up. And for those who still don't believe us and the many google hits I linked - they talk about it on the commentary.

Vis, I agree %120, it was all about his retirment, and it was spectacular. The subtly done scene, with the little smiles and smirks was awesome, great chemistry between those two, awesome "Boss and Employee" rhetoric between them. My only complaint was that the show didnt end with them, it continued on and went in some goofy DC explosion direction. Noah and Angela would have been a perfect way to end the episode.

Yeah, I agree. I actually thought back for a moment it did, I so tried to block out that part. But Angela and Noah's storyline looks like it will make up for that.

Ha! I know what a cigar sometimes repesents, but a watch? I can't think, and if I could, I'd probably shudder to think!
Oh and I can't tell if people are really struggling with it, or not, but for those who aren't sure the saying is "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". It's usually a suffix to the theory that men smoking cigars have a deep-seated subconscious desire to be smoking something else.

A nice fat cheque! The nice watch should come out of the wage you were getting before you retired! You can still use it for things such as getting to work on time, etc. You don't need a watch when you're retired, all you do is sit at home in your slippers reading catalogues!?
