Great and worthwhile idea. If I remember the stats correctly 1 out of every 150 people have some form of Autism. If I lived in the area I would be interested in attending. My spouse and I have 2 Asperger children.

That's awesome. I'd have gone if I lived nearby. Ironically enough, I had Epilepsy as a kid, and now have the diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (Band From TV give part of it's money to the Epilepsy Foundation, and now will be playing at an event for Autism).

Its happening in April, so if you have the money...

My best friend's son has autism. I lie awake at night thinking what happens to him after we're all gone.

I have Asperger's and sometimes I can't understand the emotions of others, but that doesn't stop my day. I wonder what will happen to me in the future with my career though?

I'm glad that you made a posting about the event, but Band From TV is just one of the artists who will be there. This event was made possible by photographer and camera assistant Greg Cohen. The show will have a wide array of photographic offerings, all of which are being auctioned for charity, and the accompaniment of music. Music by Band From TV, Wendy and Lisa, and others. It's going to be really, really fantastic. I just interviewed Mr. Cohen tonight for an interview for House Petrelli. I should have that squared away by early next week. It's an amazing event Mr. Cohen has worked out. So many people from the show have come together to make this happen. It truly is Heroes for Autism.

If you cannot attend, they are collecting donations as well.

Good points.

Also, if you're a GE employee, GE will match your donation if you want to donate.

It sounds like its going to be a blast and a wonderful way to support a cause that desperately needs it.

Some good photography, too. I'm rather excited about seeing Milo's piece in person. It's a very good series...and it's Adrian Pasdar. There are eleven people from Heroes who are showing pieces. In addition to the eleven, one of the child artists is the son of an employee on the show. This benefit harks back to the challenge Kring gave at Comic Con in 07. I'm so excited about this and I want Cohen to be really successful with it.

Another thing to note is that April is Autism Awareness Month.

That sounds like a fun event and cool cause! Neat to see Ntare in the mix of artists - Usutu was a great character, imo...

Well, I donated to Jake's Crazy Brainwaves for the National Walk for Epilepsy comin' up in about a week, so I figure the next one I can kinda help out with is by donatin' for this cause, too.

Cool to see what the HEROES folks do to help out!

You do what we all do. We carry on. You do what you can. If you can write here you are far, far, far ahead of those severely constrained by autism.

You can communicate with the world. A lot of us have trouble sorting out the emotions of others. If you can't emotionally understand you can intellectually understand whether people are expressing emotions about something.

My godson can't. He has problems with touching, hearing certain common sounds and he can't be in a yard without a fence. He can barely communicate at all. His words don't sound like words.

But he is also an extraordinarily handsome boy. If only we could hug him.

I'm sorry, I didn't respond earlier. I wish you strength and blessings.

I remember when Autism and its off-shoots were considered rare. So something has happened--beyond reporting and recognizing this condition. I personally believe its a degrading of the health of our air, water, food supply and possibly drugs.

For instance, we know that in the area where my godson lived, within the same apartment complex, three families with no prior family history of autism had children in the same year with autism. These things when they happen are indications of something being wrong in an area.

Thank you Rebel and yes, you are very right that this is beginning to reach epidemic proportions now. 1 child every 8 minutes if I remember correctly, is newly diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. (To illustrate this more fully) If 1 child disappeared every 8 minutes it would only take a few days at most to have the nation in arms. Asperger Syndrome is the least severe on the spectrum. Many of them can function in society. My husband did not even know he was an Aspie until he was 43 years old (at the time our oldest was diagnosed). He just appeared a little eccentric or odd. Our life can be trying but I wouldn't trade it. Our family is unique and we are well suited to each other. While Asperger Syndrome tends to be genetic the children with High Functioning and Kaner's Autism are more random in the population. They also have more difficulty in life and school. If only the neurologically typical population will bend just a little bit and help those out on the Autism Spectrum, the world would be a much better place. Without people like Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Mozart and others (all somewhere on the Autism Spectrum); this world would be much worse off than it is now.

Greg Cohen Talks Heroes for Autism - reprinted with permission from me, its writer, and HousePetrelli.com:

By the end of 2008, Greg Cohen, camera assistant on NBC’s Heroes, photographer, and curator, felt invincible, like he could take on anything. He had just produced his own wedding and he had witnessed America come together and make the proclamation of “Yes we can!” by electing President Barack Obama. The next question to Cohen was what should he, a man who was now gifted with the ability to do anything and not fail, do?

Cohen focused his attention on a condition that is close to his own heart: autism. His best friend’s two sons both have the condition. Cohen did not realize what an epidemic it is, though. “There are more cases of autism than pediatric cancer, AIDS, and diabetes combined,” Cohen says. “1 in every 150 children will be diagnosed with autism by the time he or she turns three. 1 in every 94 boys is autistic.” Cohen immediately knew how he wanted to help: he would hold a benefit where he would showcase photography. And thus the April 19th event, Heroes for Autism, at the Avalon, began to take form. After setting things up with Autism Speaks, Cohen decided to broaden his vision and turned to his coworkers at Heroes. The positive response to his idea was overwhelming; everyone wanted to help. Cohen, unknowingly, had hit on something that connected many of them: eighteen of his fellow co-workers had a family member who has autism.

From the time he shared his idea with his fellow co-workers, things started snowballing. “I went to Greg Grunberg [drummer for the all-celebrity charity band Band from TV] and it was a match.” Grunberg agreed to have his band play at the benefit. Joining Band from TV is the musical duo behind the music of Heroes, Wendy and Lisa. “They got their band together and are bringing some surprise guests,” Cohen says enthusiastically. “Some pretty amazing, high-profile people. It’ll be a great show.”

In addition to the music, Cohen has compiled a collection of art and photography to be displayed and then auctioned at the event. There will be roughly eighty pieces from almost twenty-five different artists. Almost half of these artists work on Heroes. Cohen is especially excited to be working with photographer and actor Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine again. Mwine plays the character Usutu in Heroes’s third season. Cohen showed Mwine’s work last year in a photography show in LA and wanted Mwine to be a part of this show. “He is a really talented artist,” Cohen says. Mwine is not the only actor-turned-photographer in this show: regular cast members Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia will be having pieces shown, too. Also from Heroes is the show’s very own artist Tim Sale. Sale will be having six pieces at the event. The other artists in this event are artists who have autism. At nine years old, Kyle White is the youngest artist in the show. White is also a child of someone who is on the staff of Heroes. “All of the artists with autism exhibiting in this event are relatively high functioning and lead lives within mainstream society,” Cohen points out, but is quick to add, “but this is not the case for most of the people who have this disorder.”

The photographs in the auction will not be the only photographs that are on display during the evening. Cohen says that there will be a wall of photography taken by some of the crew members of Heroes. These people include Wendi Allison (affectionately known as “Wendi the Makeup Lady” by pros and fans alike), Allan Arkush, and Greg Beeman. Their pictures will depict the actors and crew behind-the-scenes. Cohen calls this a “window into the Heroes family” and a great way to show fans and others some of the things they do.

Cohen says he hopes this event is not a one-time affair, but continues annually. “I see it as a jumping off point to something larger.” The most compelling thing to Cohen about this event is what is at the heart of Heroes: “as I started this, I thought of the genesis of the show: ordinary people with extraordinary abilities, trying to save the world. Collectively, there is power. I hope together we can make a small difference.” Cohen gives special emphasis to the help he receives from Allan Arkush and Dennis Hammer in bringing the event to life. Both Arkush and Hammer “are key components in making this happen. It is really inspiring to work with them.”

Originally, Cohen wanted this event to happen during the end of March, but he is pleased with the April 19th date. “April is Autism Awareness Month. For this month, when you purchase something from the NBC online store, you will be offered a blue puzzle piece pin at checkout. The five dollars from the cost of the pin will go to benefit Autism Speaks, thereby raising awareness.” Heroes and NBC have also arranged for Heroes for Autism to be the first event that kicks off the Heroes All Access Fanclub. Details will be announced shortly on NBC.com/Heroes.

Even if you are unable to attend the Heroes for Autism event, you can still help. Heroes for Autism is accepting donations from everywhere in the world. Any amount you can give will help. Like Cohen says, there is real power in everyone working together. Only working together can we help save the world.

If you haven't checked out what artwork is at the auction, you really must. You can find the artists' pages here: http://www.heroesforautism.com/theartists/

I'm more than a little in love with one of Milo's pieces: http://www.heroesforautism.com/theartists/milo-ventimiglio/ I really want to ask Milo if he has any future plans of exhibiting his photography in further shows. I really love his photographic eye.

Hayden has a very good eye, too: http://www.heroesforautism.com/theartists/hayden-panetierre/ The photographer at work. smile.gif

I definitely want to check out Ntare at other exhibitions: http://www.heroesforautism.com/theartists/ntare-mwine/ Of the three, he seems the most likely to be in more, as he's taken part in exhibitions before.

What I don't understand is that I just noticed that the 2nd of April is World Autism Awareness Day, and the site lists a bunch of events worldwide, but not "HEROES For Autism". The pr folks need to get on the ball!

I mean, it just seems like HEROES For Autism should get affiliated with WAAD, unless, for some odd reason, HFA has some other objectives in mind. blink.gif HFA is partnered with Autism Speaks, and they recognize WAAD - it seems like HFA should, too, or vice versa, imo.

Just a thought.

About Autism:
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The prevalence of autism has increased ten fold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

About Autism Speaks:
Autism Speaks is the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks funds more than $30 million each year in new autism research, in addition to supporting the Autism Treatment Network, Autism Genetic Resource Exchange, Clinical Trials Network, Autism Tissue Program and a range of other scientific and medical programs. Notable awareness initiatives include the establishment of the annual United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and an award-winning, multi-year national public service advertising campaign with the Ad Council. Autism Speaks' family services efforts include the Autism Video Glossary, a 100 Day Kit for newly-diagnosed families, a School Community Tool Kit and the distribution of community grants to local service providers. Its government relations division has played a critical role in securing federal legislation to advance the federal government's response to autism, and has successfully advocated for insurance reform to require insurers to cover medically-necessary autism therapies. Each year, Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism fundraising events are held in more than 70 cities across the country, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom.

Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism, and provides a voice to hundreds of thousands of families. To learn more about Autism Speaks, please visit www.autismspeaks.org.

Got this letter from Greg.

Friends and Heroes,

Here comes the big push...

www.heroesforautism.com has finally arrived, please check it out!

Don Short and I founded Heroes For Autism in November, and together with many other people, we have been working night and day to produce something really special. I honestly feel it’s the best work I’ve done, and I’m proud to share it with you.

Tickets are now on sale, and so we're asking for help. We need to sell 500 tickets, and this can only be done when we join together. We are thankful some people have already committed to selling 10 pairs of tickets to benefit this fundraiser. We encourage you to help out in a similar way. We will gladly recognize anyone who has sold a bulk of tickets.

The show is going to be an amazing night of world class art and music, and it’s going to help a lot of people who struggle daily with autism. I truly hope you can be part of it in some way.

If you have any thoughts or questions of any kind, please let me know.

Thank you!

Greg

More updates!

Greg is doing a satellite tour, so that'll go out to many NBC affiliates, and Cris Rose is doing radio tour for us on Monday to promote both the night's episode and the event.

KCRW is also plugging it all week.

I really wish I could go to this event. It sounds fantastic. Sadly, although I have tickets to fly to California to visit friends, I'm going 10 days too late. Hopefully, I will have some money left to send to the cause after my vacation.

So who's going to the reception?

Do you have to bid on the artwork?

And can I just dress for rocking out or do I have to wear a cocktail dress?

No, you don't have to bid on the artwork.

Dress how you feel is best. Gotta wear your dancing shoes.

I'm thinking rocking--sans KISS makeup (just kidding), don't want to frighten people. Maybe I should ask LorenLA.

Go for that. You won't frighten people. This is being touted as a fan event, too. You're going to find all different modes of dress there.

Now I have to come up with some money. Band from TV is coming to south Florida, so I have to buy a ticket. It's bad timing, since I spent $100 for a ticket to see Denis Leary and friends, and I am going to California on Vacation on the 29th. But I have to see the band, since I can't go to Heroes for Autism. At least I know the money from this will go to charity. It makes spending the money on a ticket a bit easier to justify.

Autism is the fastest growing serious disorder in America today.
It affects more people than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined,
and occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups.
1 in 150 children born today will be diagnosed with autism.
The cause is unknown, and there is no cure.

Heroes For Autism is a one-night only, high-profile celebration of art and music in the name of autism. NBC's HEROES and Autism Speaks have come together to host a silent auction, featuring mixed media artwork by its cast and crew alongside artwork by twelve of the world’s most celebrated artists with autism. Emceed by Rainn Wilson, the evening includes a VIP cocktail hour as KCRW's Jeremy Sole spins. Taking the stage first is the celebrity Band From TV, featuring Hugh Laurie, Greg Grunberg, Adrian Pasdar, and James Denton, among others. Headlining the evening is Wendy & Lisa’s all-star band, including Sheryl Crow and Nikka Costa, with surprise guests! The star studded event is designed to raise awareness about the epidemic. All money raised will go to Autism Speaks.
When: Sunday, April 19th Where: The Avalon Hollywood, 1735 Vine Street, LA, CA 90028.
Tickets: VIP $200, GA $70. For more info and to buy tickets: www.heroesforautism.com

Come on people! Sylar knows you want to...

Y'know what's annoying.

I went the Avalon Hollywood web-site, you have to go to Special Events to see the "Heroes" event. Else you'd never know its happening.
